Alcohol content does not necessarily determine the quality of the wine. Assuming your favorite winemaker is fermenting wine dry (near zero residual sugar), the alcohol content for a given batch of wine is pretty much set the day the grapes begin fermentation. There is a direct correlation between the amount of sugar in the grapes and the resulting alcohol content. High alcohol percentage does not necessarily result in an alcohol dominated or “hot” wine. There’s too much generic food and wine in the world. I wanted to make a wine, and grow food, in one place. I like knowing where my food comes from, who produced it. I like buying salad greens from Maya at the Downtown Phoenix Farmers’ Market. I know it was nourished with organic compost, I know it wasn’t sprayed with Roundup and picked and sorted by a machine. That means everything to me. So, that’s how I committed to make our wines. We only make wine from grapes grown at our place. We ferment with the wild yeasts that come in on the fruit. We nourish our soils with organic Gypsum and compost, balancing the pH of the soil instead of adding acids from a lab in California. We weed by hand and machine instead of spraying, and treat the vines with only organic sprays. And we mow between the rows instead of harrowing, mowing the wild grasses so the nutrients return to the soil, also absorbing CO2 instead of adding to the atmosphere.

Tim White is owner and winemaker of Iniquus Cellars, Second Veil and founder of Kindred. He began his winemaking career in southwest Virginia in 2004 as a harvest intern. In the fall of 2007, Tim moved to Northern Arizona to pursue his winemaking career. He joined a new wine brand created by Maynard James Keenan and his business partners as winemaker in its inaugural year. There he established a wine style and created programs for the label, earning numerous accolades that include 90 point scores from the Tasting Panel Magazine, Gold Medal Award of American Excellence at the Jefferson Cup Invitational Wine Competition and Arizona’s first and only Double Gold at San Francisco’s International Wine Competition. Through his winemaking talent and expertise, Tim has brought Arizona wine to the forefront, receiving over 30 gold and silver medals in competitions nationally and internationally. In 2011, he created Kindred, a four-barrel winemakers collaboration among some of the most notable vintners in the state, now in its third vintage. Both the wine and the project as a whole were a huge success, showcasing Tim once again as a frontrunner in the Arizona wine industry through his focus on innovation, collaboration and talent.

Our visit was fun and enjoyable because our host was great and the tastings were good. However, we were at a shop not at the vineyard or winery. The winery is for sale so no more wine is being produced. The wine is very good, but the selection is from what is left. Currently the selection is good. They only produced red wine; however, our bottle to take with us was a Chardonnay which can only be used for cooking since the quality is not good enough to drink.

Megan was first introduced to the world of winemaking at Sonoita Vineyard. Sonoita is the original Sonoita-area vineyard, and was founded in 1983. She spent a year as a volunteer, helping tend the farm. Working outdoors to grow the plants became what she wanted to do with the rest of her life, and opening her own winery quickly became part of that desire.

Domaine La Bastide Saint Dominique is a recent success story in the Southern Rhone Valley. The domaine was founded in 1976. 4 years later, in 1980, Domaine La Bastide Saint Dominique produced, bottled and sold their first wine. Domaine La Bastide Saint Dominique is owned by the Bonnet family who are also well-known negociants in the Rhone Valley.
