Our original founders brought tradition engrained by Italian ancestors, to embrace local processes that would sustain a deep and abiding respect for the Napa region. They were the first family-owned winery to plant the visionary Italian varietal of Pinot Grigio on the estate vineyard, on the eastern hillside of the Silverado Trail.

Located in the heart of the Santa Maria Valley, these low-yielding vines grow on a sandy plateau with great drainage. The vines are entirely own-rooted. Now over 28 years old, the vines uniquely originated from a Martini selection from Burgundy. The Pinot Noir consequently is highly perfumed, of silky delicacy and fine texture. My interpretation of this vineyard focuses on lightness and charm, beauty and elegance, highlighting strawberry notes with a slight earthy “nori-like” quality. My friendship with Vineyard Owner and Manager Gary Burk adds a special dimension.

Our 2017 Bajka Cabernet has been out of this barrel and in bottle since April. We can’t wait to release it to you. It’s finally coming out of ‘bottle shock’ and tasting better than it did coming out of the barrel. Oldy but a goody! We were so proud to get a Gold Medal for our efforts with the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon. We don’t hang our hats on scores or points but it’s always nice to get a gold!

Gandona, as my grandfather was known to villagers, was a man of compassion and kindness. His means were slightly more than most, and he earned a reputation for his kind deeds and loaning of money to those in need. He was nicknamed Gandona, which in English translates loosely to “humble man”. Eventually my grandfather became too old to work the farm and he moved to the nearby village. After he passed away in 1974, the Quinta was sold. A few years later, wildfires damaged a large portion of the property, but the old vineyard was left unharmed. In 2009, my wife Cristina and I reacquired the Quinta and began its restoration. As a child, I spent summers on my grandfather’s farm in the Douro region of Portugal. The school year couldn’t end fast enough so I could return to my life there. The farm was named “Quinta Fraga do Arco” after the unique arched rock formation that has graced the property since pre-historic times. We grew grapes and olives which were sold to nearby villages. In 2006 Hawley Vineyards became certified organic by California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) after three years of following organic practices. Not only do we believe in the philosophy of sustainable agriculture but are convinced that organic grapes make better wine. Crop and berry size are reduced, virtually eliminating the need for crop thinning. We feel that organic growing reveals a more authentic expression of terroir since the farmer is not providing the vines with exotic nutrients.

In 1098, a group of Benedictine monks broke off and established a monastery in a swampland called Citeaux in Burgundy, France. With vows of poverty and labor, they prospered. Soon they constructed an Abbey, drained the swampland and planted what is now one of the most famous vineyards in the world– Clos De Vougeot. This new order of monks became known as Cistercians, and their legacy of winemaking would become renowned. Cistercian vineyards were planted throughout Europe; the monks were responsible for propagating varietals common to this day such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Tempranillo and Riesling. They also developed the viticultural practices of trellising and leaf thinning, and they determined that certain locations gave different grape varities unique characteristics — a term known to this day as “terroir.” Another monastic reformation occurred in 1664, this time at La Trappe Abbey in Normandy, France. Eventually these monks would become known as the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance (O.C.S.O), or “Trappists.” Today, Trappist-Cistercians continue to dedicate their lives to personal prayer, communal prayer and manual labor.
