Nellis Vineyards was started in 2003 with vine cuttings, guidance and encouragement from a generous friend who was willing to teach and share his wine making and grape growing knowledge. In 2005 Nellis Vineyards harvested our first crop, making 16 gallons of wine. Since then, it has been a goal to grow Oklahoma grapes which produces Oklahoma wines from Nellis Vineyards.

Most wines evoke the taste sensations of sweet, salty, bitter, and sour. Kalin Cellars wines are among the VERY, VERY few wines presently available that evoke the FIFTH Taste of Umami. Umami is a newly discovered basic taste that is fundamentally different from the other four. It is variously described as delicious, savory or meaty. It is associated with the taste of perfection – a wine, fruit, cheese, mushroom, or ham that is at its peak of flavor maturity and quality. Most wines are either not capable of attaining Umami or are offered for sale long before the fifth flavor of perfection is achieved. Kalin Cellars wines are aged in temperature and humidity-controlled underground cellars until they achieve the perfection of Umami. Only after three to ten years of bottle age are these wines released for sale.

Started making wines about 17 years ago, when my wife, Deanna, gave me a wine making kit for Christmas. It was just a plastic bucket and a 6-gallon glass carboy. My first attempt was a raspberry wine, which turned out to be undrinkable. I was intrigued to find out why. I began doing a lot of research and buying testing equipment. My wines started to improve at this point. Then, my wife bought me a grape press for another Christmas gift, and so my endeavor into grape wines started. I was learning as much as I could about cold hardy grapes and trying to improve on them every year. I entered my wines into the biggest amateur wine making contest in the world. I started winning golds and silvers. From this point on, it’s taken a course of its own. It has been a lot of hard work and long days, but I couldn’t have done it without the help and support of my family.

I first made Pinot Noir as a home winemaker in 1985. I have been employed at Rochioli Winery since 1990 and worked the 1988 & 1989 crush, and have been Cellar Master at Rochioli for the last twenty-eight years. I created the Castalia label in 1992. The 2017 and 2018 vintages produced 250 cases each. The wine was kept for 15 months in oak, 25% new, all French. This has given the wine a much softer feel at release. As always the wine is 100% from the Rochioli vineyards. The Flad Vinyard was planted to the West Block Clone back in the late 1980s and also from the River Block, a West Block clone planted at the same time. These blocks give my wine its special character. The rest of the wine is from Dejon clones 777,115 and 667 from three different vinyards.

The name “Bells Up” ties together our location on Bell Road with Dave’s 20-plus years as a French horn player who performed throughout high school and college. The musical term refers to a dramatic moment in classical music where the composer’s score instructs the French horn players to lift the bells of their instruments up to project their sound with maximum intensity. The winery, says Dave, is his #bellsupmoment The 9-acre Bells Up estate vineyard—comprised entirely of Jory soil and located in the Chehalem Mountains AVA just north of Newberg—is being planted in phases and primarily in Pinot Noir. The first 3 acres of Heritage clone Pommard and Dijon clone 667 were planted in April 2014, with posts and wires added in March 2015. A third block (0.5-acre) of the Willamette Valley’s first planting of Seyval Blanc was established in March 2015. Three additional blocks (2.5 acres) of Heritage clone Wadenswil, and Dijon clones 113 and 943 were planted in March 2016. In fall 2020 the Seyval Blanc block was expanded and an obscure Northern Italian varietal added in a new block. The remaining acreage, closest to Bell Road, is anticipated to be planted at a future date. .

Rancho Sisquoc Winery has been crafting quality wines in small quantities for over 40 years. We grow over 300 acres of superb vineyards for our award winning estate wines. Located in northern Santa Barbara County on the Sisquoc River, 14 miles east of Santa Maria, Rancho Sisquoc is part of an 1852 Mexican land grant. The winery is part of a 37,000 acre cattle ranch and farm purchased in 1952 by Mr. and Mrs. James Flood of San Francisco. The cattle business is the same as it has always been, but the beans and barley have been replaced with vegetables and vines. Because the area’s climate and soil compared favorably with the renowned growing regions of Napa and Sonoma, Mr. Flood decided to plant grapes. The initial planting in the late 1960’s consisted of nine acres of Johannesberg Riesling and 40 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon. Current acreage is 300 and growing. In 1972, then ranch manager Harold Pfeiffer produced the first wines. In 1977, Rancho Sisquoc became a bonded winery and the tasting room was built.

“12 Ranch Wines” is a small family owned winery located in Bonanza, Oregon. We specialize in small, handcrafted lots of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Our grapes are hand picked from select vineyards in the Rogue Valley of Southern Oregon. We work very closely with all our vineyards through out the growing season, especially when it gets close to harvest. We must not forget that a great wine begins in the vineyard. Sugar, acid levels and when to harvest are just a few of the decisions our vineyards allow us to make. After years of working with some of the most prestigious wineries in the area, Lance wanted to take his winemaking skills in his own direction. Lance succeeded in handcrafting blends distinctly his own, and in April 2003 the first vintage of the winery’s signature blend, Ursa, was released. Ursa, a feminine expression of red wine, predominantly Merlot and Cabernet Franc, was soon followed by Arctos, a bolder Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend. As operations moved from an apartment in Redmond to a converted property on six rural acres in Woodinville, the winery was able to grow in production. Lance’s passion went from just 200 cases in 2003 to over 3,000 cases now. In 1976, after working for the New York State government in Albany for eleven years and assisting with the passage of the farm-winery bill, Jim Doolittle (Cornell University – CALS ’67) and Carol Doolittle (Good Counsel College/Pace University ’68) decided that they wanted to have their own winery. “It sounded like fun,” and so they embarked upon an adventure. In 1978, they purchased a promising site with a panoramic view of Cayuga Lake, and planted their first three acres of vines. In 1982, Frontenac Point Vineyard became New York farm-winery #44, producing only 400 cases of wine. Frontenac Point is on the west side of Cayuga Lake, and all of the grapes used to make our wines are grown in the winery’s own 18-acre vineyard, on slopes of low elevation, protected by a microclimate influenced by Ontario and Cayuga Lakes. This provides a long growing season during which the finest grape varieties ripen perfectly to produce world-class wines. The combination of estate-grown grapes, Cazenovia and Aurora silt loam soils, climate, and Frontenac Point’s winemaking techniques produces wines that are truly appellation Cayuga Lake.

Andrew Murray fell in love with the emerging Rhône varieties, Syrah and Viognier, in the late 1980’s while traveling through France’s Rhône Valley. Leaving his UC Berkeley paleontology studies behind, he pursued his new mistress, Syrah, with an internship in Australia. His three-month tryst evolved into a 15-month romance with the famed Australian Shiraz. Returning to the states, he earned a bachelor’s degree in viticulture and enology from UC Davis’ renowned wine program, then founded his eponymous Santa Ynez winery and vineyard. Dan Gatlin grew up in the retail beverage trade as his family were the owners & operators of the Hasty chain of wine, spirits and convenience stores in Dallas, Texas. His father, Vernon Gatlin, had worked his way up from Depression Era beginnings after Prohibition. After service in WWII, Vernon Gatlin returned to Dallas and established himself as an astute businessman building the A&A Company to 28 stores, and later, Hasty to 15 convenience and 11 wine & spirits stores under his ownership. Vernon Gatlin died in 1981 and his wife, Virginia, passed away in 1988.

Franco Marchesi’s passion for wine began in his hometown of Borgosesia, Piemonte, Italy. As a child he always wondered what it would be like to be a winemaker like his grandfather Achille. Our philosophy at Sleeping Dog Wines is that dogs and wines share many similar properties. When they are young, they are lively, colorful, sometimes out of control, and often times lots of fun. Shortly after the Civil War, our great-grandfather, Francesco Passalacqua, arrived in California from San Lorenzo della Costa, Italy. Like many Italian immigrants during this time, Francesco settled in Sonoma County hoping to achieve the American Dream. He financially supported himself by selling produce from a vegetable wagon. By 1896 Francesco had earned enough money to purchase a ranch in Alexander Valley for the cost of ten gold coins. Francesco and his son Emil, our grandfather, planted Zinfandel grapes on this ranch. Michael’s interest in wine began when he was in college at Loyola University. He found a job at a specialty grocery store, working in the imported cheese department. His employer wanted him to be able to suggest wine pairings for the fine cheese they sold there, but Michael was only 17 at the time and could not drink wine. Owners, Wayne and Linda Gay, “retired” to Johnson County, TN, in 2002 after spending 22 years in the Italian import business. During this time, Linda and Wayne, grew to love the mountains and vineyard covered slopes of Italy. When they discovered East Tennessee, they immediately felt as if they had been transported to the Italian Alps. They purchased 35 acres overlooking Watauga Lake and began construction of “Villa Nove”, an Italian inspired farmhouse whose namesake is a small town in northern Italy where their import business began.

Hand selected, only the “crème de la Crème” of the Cabernet grapes were used in creating this wine. Godsend receives extended barrel aging of eighteen months in French oak and an additional six months in new medium toasted American oak barrels. This additional aging gives the wine added complexity and depth. Classic Cabernet aromas of rich currant, cassis and soft spiced oak. Godsend stands for an elegant, balanced, well structured wine with a long velvet finish.
