The beginning of our winery story is similar to so many others in our industry: a hobby that went out of control! Kevin began making wine in his basement shortly after college. Prior to making it, Kevin rarely drank wine, but he was quickly consumed by the wine culture. An initial five-gallon batch started from California Cabernet juice grew into experiments with any fruit juice Kevin could obtain. Some results were better than others.

Andrew Murray fell in love with the emerging Rhône varieties, Syrah and Viognier, in the late 1980’s while traveling through France’s Rhône Valley. Leaving his UC Berkeley paleontology studies behind, he pursued his new mistress, Syrah, with an internship in Australia. His three-month tryst evolved into a 15-month romance with the famed Australian Shiraz. Returning to the states, he earned a bachelor’s degree in viticulture and enology from UC Davis’ renowned wine program, then founded his eponymous Santa Ynez winery and vineyard. Andrew and his family were drawn to the natural beauty, climate, soils and topography of Santa Barbara County. It all reminded him of his travels through the Rhône Valley where he first fell in love with the notion of winegrowing while just a teenager.

In June of 2016 they sold the property to Ric and Michelle Campos and they named it Campos Family Vineyards. During the three years that the Leers owned the vineyard the couple turned it into a successful winery with a tasting room, event center, softball field, wedding and concert venue. The Leers hosted large country concerts with headliners such as Clay Walker, Kellie Pickler, Rodney Atkins, Easton Corbin and Coffey Anderson.

Samantha Sheehan founded POE in 2009 after being inspired by the wines she tasted in Burgundy and Champagne. The goal is not to replicate Burgundy, but rather create alluring, vineyard specific, age-worthy wines revealing the beautiful terroir of California. There is minimal intervention, judicious use of sulfur, and never any additives. POE produces traditional Champagne method sparkling wines, rosé, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and a nouveau from Pinot Noir. In 2013, with the help of family and friends the Perry’s opened their blueberry farm to the public. A Growing Farm Since 2013, the Perry’s have planted over 3000 blueberry bushes. In addition to offering pick your own blueberries, they supply blueberries to local breweries, grocery stores, bakeries and ice cream shops. There are several bee hives located throughout the farm for pollination of the berries. A Greenhouse with flowers and vegetable plants. Perry’s Berry’s Winery opened in July 2020. We are excited to offer our Blueberry Wine made with 100% blueberries from our farm.

In 1979 we made, rather tentatively, a batch of Chenin Blanc and some Grey Riesling, affectionately remembered as “the green torpedo.” Forty years later, we still produce our beloved Chenin Blanc from the vines that have passed the 55-year old mark, as well as our historic Tinto field blend and a dozen other small batch wines. Over the years we have tried to keep our production small, costs down, and make great wine at affordable prices by doing a lot of work ourselves.

August Schaad settled on Parrott Mountain in 1902. He established a farm and passed the love of the land to his children. Including his oldest child, Clarence. Clarence bought a small farm across the road from his parents and later bought additional farmland on Chehalem Mountain that is now the working part of our farm and home to August Cellars. August Cellars, established in 2002, is a family-owned corporation. The winery is named after great-grandfather and patriarch, August Schaad. August Cellars represents the desires of the third and fourth generations to keep the family farm in agricultural use rather than sold off as a housing development. The winery is located at 14000 NE Quarry Road, Newberg Oregon. The farm has 42 acres of land in production that includes English walnuts, and Italian prunes, a Pinot Noir vineyard and several acres of timber. This cross-section of crops and land uses allows the native fauna to prosper. We have seen chipmunks and squirrels, a black-tailed weasel, foxes, bobcats, cougars, coyotes, hawks and eagles, as well as quail and bluebirds.

Since 1999 we have been producing handmade wines from the remote and arid Columbia Valley AVA in Eastern Washington. There is probably no other wine grape variety that better reflects the place from which it comes than Cabernet Sauvignon. Soil, geographic orientation and climate all contribute to a vineyards “terroir,” and the Cabernet Sauvignon grape provides the perfect structure upon which these distinct characteristics can emerge. The geographical location and terrain of Coombsville has unique microclimates which provide a long growing season where grapes develop a superb range of flavors with extended hang time. The Cabs from this area tend to lean more toward Bordeaux style wines than the rest of the valley. Le Chanceux is family owned and operated with a small production of approximately 200 cases annually. Every vintage is unique and carefully nurtured along on the vines until optimum quality is reached. Our small batches are hand crafted with minimal intervention and maximum attention and are aged in French oak barrels.

Pizzulli is not new to winemaking. In 2003, he planted Sangiovese vines in a half-acre hillside vineyard located on the grounds of his Pacific Palisades home. A few years later, Pizzulli produced his first wine from those vines in a wooden shed across the driveway from his house. Inspired by fond memories of making wine with his grandfather in Brooklyn, Pizzulli is continuing the tradition of crafting small lots of Italian varietals handed down through the generations of Pizzulli family winemakers, from Puglia, Italy to the Central Coast of California. By 1984, Bert had planted another six acres on adjoining land that he and Lynne had acquired. It was then that they started to grow the vinifera grapes that Bert felt would make the best wine. Federal regulations allowed Bert to make only 200 gallons of wine for home consumption, so the extra fruit was sold to vineyards in the area, while Bert perfected his winemaking techniques.

Heidi Barrett grew up in the Napa Valley in a winemaking family and was destined to become one of California’s leading winemakers. It is said that winemaking is a combination of science and art. She studied viticulture and winemaking in France and graduated with a degree in fermentation science from the University of California, Davis. She worked in South Africa and at Hogue Cellars in Washington State. In 1990 she was appointed head winemaker at Foris Winery in Southern Oregon. She later became the first winemaker at Southern Oregon’s RoxyAnn Winery. Ted Gerber, owner of Foris, said she truly had an “international palate”.

The origin or meaning of our name “Enkidu” comes from one of the oldest stories ever recorded: The Epic of Gilgamesh. Written in Sumerian cuneiform nearly 4500 years ago, the story details the life of King Gilgamesh and his best friend Enkidu. Enkidu was a steward of the land and protector of animals, and was created by the gods as a foil to Gilgamesh. Two-thirds deity and one-third human, he embodied strength, passion, and incredible bravery, yet at times showed fear and trepidation of the unknown. Early in his existence, Enkidu was rustic and rough around the edges, and over time he became more cultured and refined. He evolved while staying true to his nature, the same way a grape does as it jouneys from the vine, through the vinification process, to a finished wine.

Over 25 years ago, Paul Renzaglia never would have thought that a family venture would have such a profound effect on Southern Illinois and its community. From the very first plantings in 1982, the Renzaglia family and Alto Vineyards were committed to introducing a new industry to the region. President and wine maker Paul Renzaglia even felt like he was stepping into unknown territory. “At first I was scared that this venture would not go anywhere. But now I’ve seen the tremendous growth and popularity of the industry in Illinois and I am just amazed as to what has come of it,” he said. Although an appreciation of wine is deeply rooted in the Renzaglia family, improving the lives of others was Paul’s first passion. He completed his Bachelor’s degree at SIU in Administration of Justice and moved on to work with troubled youth in the St. Louis and Chicago areas. Paul returned to Southern Illinois 10 years later to enroll in the Special Education graduate program at SIU, and was quickly recruited by his father, Guy Renzaglia, as a partner.

During our annual September harvest, we pick, crush, and ferment, our grapes to produce a local favorite award-¬winning Meritage, sounds like heritage, wine. Each vintage is a blend, using up to five traditional Bordeaux red wine grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. Everyone said we were crazy when we gave up our jobs (teaching and pharmaceutical sales) to open a winery. They were right in a way, because we are crazy about what we do. Armed with the vision of an artisan farmer with a Harvard MBA, Jack Day guided planting the original 20 acres on the Southwest slopes of Roxy Ann Peak in 1997. The first harvest of grapes at RoxyAnn Winery produced 150 cases of a proprietary red “Claret” consisting of a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The property’s distinct southern Oregon climate with rich soils and southern sunshine was perfectly suited to growing grapes, just as Jack had imagined. The entire production of Claret sold out in two weeks. For more than 25 years, Chateau Thomas Winery has been bringing a taste of the old world to the heart of the Hoosier state. It started in the 1970s, when Dr. Charles Thomas, a practicing obstetrician and gynecologist, decided to expand his winemaking hobby into a full-time venture. But first, he did his homework. He dutifully collected and studied the finest French wines. He took various formal winemaking and wine-tasting courses.
