Established in 2012 by Mike Wenrick, Ore Winery produced 400 bottles of Eola-Amity Hills Pinot Noir in our first year. Since production was so limited, great attention was given to the wine making process. Ore wines are produced and bottled at the SE Wine Collective on SE Division Street in Portland, Oregon. Since our humble beginnings in 2012, Ore winery has grown production steadily to around 300 cases per year. Ore wines can be found in fine restaurant, bottle shops and markets around Oregon. Ore Winery’s 2014 Rogue Valley Sangiovese was name to the Portland Monthly’s “Oregon’s Top 50 Wines” list (out of over 1200 submissions). Mike’s wine making philosophy is simple. Although Barney passed away in 2017 at the age of 91, his legacy lives on. His daughters Beth, Patricia and Mary Ellen maintain the vineyard and winery. In the fall of 2000, we realized we needed a way to attract customers to the Inn for the offseason. Doniella Winchell suggested we start a winery, as Karen and I enjoy wine. After some thought, we decided we would give it a run, and at the time, we were winery number ten in Northeast Ohio. We built a cellar under the beach house during the winter, and in the fall of 2001, we made our first vintage of wine from locally sourced vinifera grapes. We served wine only to guests staying with us, and in the winter months, we would do wine and food pairing dinners with our wines and other locally made and sourced wines. Also, we would do winery tours to some of the wineries to showcase the quality wines being made in the region.

Our oak barrel-aged 2017 Chardonnay utilizing native wild yeast strands from the vineyard for the fermentation. This wine exhibits a light golden color, followed by a plush round mid-palate with white peach and popcorn-scented nose with excellent layers of fruit and a hint of butter in the finish. The wine is balanced and clean, with gravelly, stony scents and copious quantities of fruit. It reveals good acidity for a 2017 with medium body and full malolactic fermentation with extensive lees stirring, racked out of their barrels following eight months of cask aging, and allowed to settle in tank until bottling. Although made in a Burgundian manner, our 2017 Chardonnay boast the fruit and palate weight common to that of California Chardonnay, making this wine a real crowd pleaser.

The year 2010 marked the acquisition of approximately 200 acres in southern Overland Park, Johnson County, Kansas, right near the state line. Much of the land was and still is being used by crop and livestock farmers. On the way back from a trip to Napa, a local Johnson County family realized the land could also be used to grow grapes and produce wine. In 2012, vines were planted and grapes began to grow, establishing Aubrey Vineyards as the first winery in Overland Park. The vines are planted on land with the highest elevations around and contains gentle slopes of fertile, loamy soil that is low in clay content, which is the perfect environment for grape vines. The high location affords breezes on most days, which helps ward off vine diseases. Slopes with porous loam keep the soil well-drained.

As I tiptoe through the entertainment industry, dabbling in mediums beyond the microphone and my four-stringed piece of electric furniture, I once again find myself venturing into a new foray. What started as an attempt to fill our own personal wine cache has turned into a “boutique” wine venture and an attempt to make the best possible vino while still having a good time. To that end, we have hired two amazing winemakers; Ross Cobb and Katy Wilson, whose pedigrees include stints making wine at Hirsch, Flowers and Kamen as well as their own labels, Cobb Wines and LaRue. Having lived in West Sonoma County since 1994, I’ve watched what was once the Gravenstein apple haven of Northern California turn into a Mecca for those wine geeks who seek out optimum quality Pinot Noir. The region is known as the Russian River Valley, and further west, the Sonoma Coast appellation, and the fruit that comes from these areas is arguably some of the best on the planet.

It was in our dealings with Erath that we had the opportunity of getting to know our winemaker, Rob Stuart. In 2003, we decided to forge ahead with the dream by keeping ½ the product from our vineyards to produce our own wines under the label of Cubanisimo Vineyards. Many souls searching took place in the name selection, and label design since we wanted our homage to our Cuban heritage to be a quality product in every way. The property is high on the south facing slopes of Atlas Peak, at an altitude of approximately 1,650 feet. The vines are planted on the gently sloping hillsides reaching down to the two lakes. Our “Terroir” encompasses gentle ridge top breezes to cool the vines in the afternoon, and poor, rocky soils comprised of white volcanic ash, the “Tuff Series Geology”.

Rosa Fierro Cellars is a 100 percent woman owned winery that specializes in making hand crafted, limited production, award winning wines from Livermore and Napa Valleys. It happened about 1980 when his wife came home from Pittsburgh with a tub of grape leaves, one of the main ingredients in making stuffed grape leaves. When Glatz heard the price — $60 — he knew he could grow better grape leaves for less money. The grapes were a bonus. “Honestly, I’m really a farmer. I just really like growing things,” said Glatz, who has operated a jewelry business in Aliquippa since 1976.

Nine miles from the ocean, in a saddle between two ridge tops sits Porter-Bass Vineyard & Winery. The Russian River gently forms an oxbow around these ridges allowing the fog to drift to the foot of the vineyard, cooling the vines in the summer. The forest of Redwood and Fir that surrounds the vineyard protects the vines from strong winds and contamination from other vineyards. Being on the western edge of the Russian River Valley provides an ideal climate for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Zinfandel. This cool climate makes fruit that is naturally high in acid, at the same time the sugars stay low enough to make a balanced wine that ages gracefully.

As a native of Bernkastel, Germany who emigrated to the Finger Lakes in the 1960s, Hermann J. Wiemer was uniquely qualified to help establish and create a wine region now known for its Riesling identity. His mother’s family had been making wine in Germany’s Mosel Valley for more than 300 years. His father, a skilled nurseryman, had been in charge of the Agricultural Experiment Station in Bernkastel and was responsible for restoring vines in the Mosel region after WWII. As a result, he recognized the importance of grafting vinifera on American rootstock. Ultimately, this conviction led Hermann’s father to convince Dr. Thanisch – who maintained the most famous Riesling vineyard in the world – to graft Mosel Rieslings onto American rootstock. In 2003, Hermann’s long-term apprentice Fred Merwarth took charge of winemaking and vineyard management. Fred’s talent and ambition brought fresh energy and vision to the winery, placing it on a new trajectory. In 2007, Hermann officially retired, handing over the winery to Fred, who partnered with his university friend, Swedish agronomist Oskar Bynke, to carry on Hermann’s legacy.

After service in WWII, Vernon Gatlin returned to Dallas and established himself as an astute businessman building the A&A Company to 28 stores, and later, Hasty to 15 convenience and 11 wine & spirits stores under his ownership. Vernon Gatlin died in 1981 and his wife, Virginia, passed away in 1988.

Winemaker Matt Kinne’s family has been farming in Oregon since the early 1900’s. His great-grandfather and McKinlay Vineyard’s namesake, Reverend George Angus McKinlay, was a minister who dry-farmed fruit and nut trees in the Willamette Valley. 100 years later, Matt has established a cult following of deeply loyal fans. McKinlay Vineyards was founded in 1987 and has focused exclusively on Pinot Noir since 1995. Regularly noted for his elegant, Burgundian style, Matt is a firm believer in making his wines in the vineyard. His vines are dry farmed in well drained, volcanic soil and the shoots are trained upward, for optimal sun exposure and ventilation. Only one cluster is allowed to form on each shoot. Unsurprisingly, production is extremely low, with a focus rather on depth and concentration of flavor. Rosback was looking for some grapes to use for his basement wine operation. Wright agreed to sell the old vine zinfandel to Rosback, thus beginning their business relationship. Wright continued expanding The Pines Estate Vineyard over the years by planting a new block of zinfandel in 1987, merlot in 1991 and 1993 and syrah in 1994. In 1994, Rosback outgrew his basement and started his own winery, Sineann in Newberg, Ore. Wright sold the old vine zinfandel, younger zinfandel and merlot to be produced under the Sineann label. In 2001, Wright decided that his grapes were too good to sell to everyone else; he wanted to keep some for himself. Wright approached Rosback to be the winemaker for his new label. After a handshake agreement “The Pines 1852” was born.

Albini Family Vineyards was established in 1991 and produces about 500 cases of handmade wine each year. Although we are small, our Merlot and Zinfandel wines receive national attention for their high quality and unique style. We are proud of our artisan style of wine making, which follows a natural, hands-on approach. At 2 to 3 tons per acre, our vineyard yields are low and all of our grapes are handpicked and sorted to assure only the highest quality fruit is used. Fermentation takes place in small, open-top fermenters utilizing indigenous (wild) yeast and the cap is punched down 3 – 4 times a day. Once the wine is dry, it is pressed in a 1/2 ton basket press and then hand bucked into barrels.

Short for Pétillant Naturel, it was originally used in Limoux in the south of France in the early 16th century by winemaking monks. This artisanal method of sparkling wine is created by bottling wine that is only partially fermented allowing carbon dioxide to be produced by the natural sugars found in the grapes. Other traditional sparkling wines, like Champagne, add sugar and yeast to dry, still wine in order trigger a second fermentation and produce bubbles.

Fairly dry spring brought on bud break a couple of weeks earlier than usual and the early development continued throught flowering, veraison, harvest. Growing conditions were perfect throughout the summer. Grapes had a long hanging time to achieve full maturity and concentrate flavours.2013 show pure and polished tannins with good acidity to age well.

Tom Webb, Jr. had a love of wine making that stemmed from high school days. But it wasn’t until college that he learned the actual process of making wine from fresh fruit from his landlord who just happened to have a small scale personal winery in the basement of his home. He deepened his knowledge even more while working at a vineyard & winery in the Lehigh Valley area. Tom’s wine making skills were an asset to the owner, who was more versed on the vineyard side of things. It was a natural pairing of expertise.
