Martian Ranch has been farmed biodynamically since it’s inception in 2007 and certified Biodynamic by Demeter USA since 2010. Biodynamic wine is made with a set of farming practices that views the farm or vineyard as one solid organism. The ecosystem functions as a whole, with each portion of the farm or vineyard contributing to the next. The idea is to create a self-sustaining system. Natural materials, soils, and composts are used to sustain the vineyard. Chemical fertilizers and pesticides are forbidden for the sake of soil fertility. A range of animals from ducks to horses to sheep live on the soil and fertilize it, creating a rich, fertile environment for the vines to grow in. Biodynamic farming also seeks sustainability, or leaving the land in as good or better shape as they found it for future generations.

Our Wine Divergent Nestled on a beautifully wooded estate, Arterra wines promises a distinctive wine experience. Ancient techniques integrate with modern capacity to produce a progressive clean wine, intended to be a truly authentic ‘Virginia Style’ wine. This is done with native yeast fermentations, neutral oak, and no additives. We grow the highest quality fruit, and express vivid flavors, rich texture, and robust character. Authentic Virginia Native Yeast Spontaneous fermentation using only the yeasts naturally occurring on the grape skins in our vineyard are the initial necessity of any genuine expression of terroir. Every wine made by Arterra undergoes a progression of at least 7 indigenous yeast strains working together via sur-lie aging to increase complexity and establish an added dimension to the wine profile as a broad expansive volume. The initial strains are unique species that are not commercially available.

Often referred to as the “Birthplace of American Wine”, Jefferson Vineyards is nestled between Jefferson’s Monticello and Monroe’s Highland, only fifteen minutes from downtown Charlottesville, VA. Established nearly 40 years ago with one of the area’s most consistent award-winning track records, Jefferson Vineyards is relevant both to Charlottesville’s booming wine industry and its historic ties. Our wines range from delicate and refreshing, to elegant, full-bodied and rich. We are currently one of the highest awarded Virginia wineries for Viognier (the state grape). In 2001 we bottled one of Virginia’s first Petit Verdot varietal wine. We continue extensive experimentation with these two varietals, skin fermented white wines and a range of estate reserve wines that reflect the best of our Virginia terroir.

At Ott & Hunter Wines, we partner with several of Washington’s greatest vineyards to create a small quantity of exceptional blends and single varietal wines. We use traditional French and artisan techniques: cold soaks, co-fermentation at crush, hand punch downs, stem inclusion, sur lie aging & battonage, minimal filtration or fining, and a mixture of neutral and once-used French oak barriques and puncheons. We handle our wines very lightly during barrel aging, racking only after primary fermentation, occasionally after one year, and again prior to bottling. We favor low oxygen exposure and minimal sulfite additions during to help preserve the wines’ structure and ability to age. Our Swedish Arts and Crafts inspired winery is designed to optimize its solar exposure with an insulated, passive-solar heated fermentation room. And our cellar employs super-insulation and earth cooling to minimize its energy use. Along similar lines, we are using lighter weight glass for many of our releases, saving resources and energy.

In 1921 Giuseppe Piccione – a native of Sicily – left his small town of Marsala, home of the world-famous sweet and dry wines, and boarded the steamship “Italia” bound for America. After arriving in New York he passed through Ellis Island and settled in Brooklyn where he found employment in a garment factory. Soon after, he married Vita Valenti and started a new life in America. Life was difficult, but they never forgot their Sicilian roots, the value of hard work, and the importance of family. Dr. William Piccione, grandson of Giuseppe and Vita, was raised with these values and went on to become a Harvard-trained Cardiovascular Thoracic surgeon – actively practicing medicine for more than 20 years. Despite a demanding career, Bill has always had fond memories of his grandfather’s winemaking efforts and as a child remembers Giuseppe’s homemade winery with a handpress, small oak barrels and a manual bottling machine. This deep respect for Italian tradition and a passion for wine led Bill to obtain Italian citizenship for himself and his children and to further study wine, earning sommelier certification. In 2010, Piccione Vineyards was founded by Bill and his two sons, Billy and Steven, in the picturesque […]

2005, the winery has offered a wide variety of award winning, estate grown & bottled Vinifera wines. Additionally, we have a variety American/Hybrid, dessert, & fruit wines. Our Berlin Heights, Ohio vineyard was planted on the highest point of the farm with a distant view of Lake Erie. The vineyard’s peak sits at 834′ above sea level, approximately 100′ higher than the surrounding areas along the lake. The elevation, along with proximity to Lake Erie gives the vines added protection from spring frosts and allows longer ripening time in the fall. As well, the rolling land, and sandy loam soil provides excellent drainage.

Brian’s love for Italian wine started many years ago and stems from his lifelong love of Italian food and fascination with his Italian heritage. After working for respected Zinfandel producer Rosenblum Cellars, he traveled to Italy to work with the famous Paolo DeMarchi at Isole e Olena in Tuscany. Brian’s experience at the Tuscany winery provided him a great deal of insight into Italian winemaking, in addition to a month traveling and visiting other cellars from Tuscany to Sicily. During this trip he also reconnected with distant relatives in a small village in Sicily, the hometown of his ancestors famous for wine since the dawn of the Roman Empire. Brian’s wine making pilgrimage has not endured without some doubt and skepticism. Several years ago, he almost abandoned his dream when one of California’s most famous winemakers told him: “If you want to make nebbiolo move to Italy. You’ll never do it here.” A couple of months later a meeting with Steve Clifton of Palmina winery refreshed his momentum. Steve convinced Brian to keep working toward his dream and shared stories of his own success. In 2005 while studying enology at Fresno State he married Stephanie, the love of his life, […]

Mount Felix’s terroir is special. The soils are fertile, well drained with balance between organic content, texture, and mineral/chemical composition. The perimeter is open and free affording wonderful air-flow from a constant Chesapeake Bay breeze that will quickly dry the morning dew from our berries. Our Southeasterly oriented slopes provide long hours of light exposure inclusive of rays reflected off the vast Chesapeake Bay. This optimizes photosynthesis; thereby, converting the sun’s rays into sugar and juice stores within the grapes. Aided by our terroir, complimented by long sunny days, cool autumn nights, and a constant Chesapeake breeze, we simply seek to convert these sweet juices… produced from rays… into bottles of wine …for life, love, family, and friends.

Every year, the Autumn Equinox brings with it more balanced days and nights. Leaves shimmer with deep golden, brilliant orange and fiery red colors in the gentle fall breeze and warm sunlight. Vineyard hands work quickly to pick the perfectly ripe fruit before the balance in the brix and acid levels becomes askew. And remember, it’s birthday time for us Libras; those of us who seek the delicate balance in our lives. This balance is also an integral part of many things, including the process of transforming grapes into beautiful wine. Bill and Linda Hanson, with their daughter Lily, live by this notion; personally, with their own small production winery, as well as in their vineyard management techniques. Previously, they have been procuring fruit from non-estate vineyards, but on September 23, 2009, in tune with the Autumn Equinox, Bill harvested their first estate grapes. Inspiration for LIBRA was born from Linda, a Libra, but soon they all became immersed in all that Libra stands for. In Greek mythology, Persephone was the beautiful daughter of Zeus and Demeter, goddess of Agriculture, or “all things growing.” From the Underworld, Hades set his sights on Persephone, and brought her by force to his […]

After several long 15-hour days, and much time and energy put into such an endeavor, I was able to eventually get the vineyard back into a quality condition. During the long hours in the vineyard fantasizing about my future in the wine industry, I had a premonition of my ideal business. In 2009, that vision was born and is now Premonition Cellars. Year after year, the passion I have for the product I create grows more and more. Premonition Cellars is certainly a labor of love. It is my hope that these wines affect you in the same way they have for me.

Dogpatch Wineworks operates out of the American Industrial Center in the heart of San Francisco’s historic Dogpatch neighborhood. When it was first built the AIC was one of San Francisco’s largest structures and was described as a “sky scraper on it’s side.” It was originally occupied by the American Can Company which fulfilled contracts for the U.S. military for decades. This working class neighborhood was home to waterfront-oriented industry such as shipbuilding and steel mills that flourished until mid-century and then began a steady decline after WWII. Starting in the 1990’s a gradual revitalization of the community has brought an influx of restaurants, housing and a unique blend of commercial and industrial businesses to the neighborhood.

As a native of Bernkastel, Germany who emigrated to the Finger Lakes in the 1960s, Hermann J. Wiemer was uniquely qualified to help establish and create a wine region now known for its Riesling identity. His mother’s family had been making wine in Germany’s Mosel Valley for more than 300 years. His father, a skilled nurseryman, had been in charge of the Agricultural Experiment Station in Bernkastel and was responsible for restoring vines in the Mosel region after WWII. As a result, he recognized the importance of grafting vinifera on American rootstock. Ultimately, this conviction led Hermann’s father to convince Dr. Thanisch – who maintained the most famous Riesling vineyard in the world – to graft Mosel Rieslings onto American rootstock. In 2003, Hermann’s long-term apprentice Fred Merwarth took charge of winemaking and vineyard management. Fred’s talent and ambition brought fresh energy and vision to the winery, placing it on a new trajectory. In 2007, Hermann officially retired, handing over the winery to Fred, who partnered with his university friend, Swedish agronomist Oskar Bynke, to carry on Hermann’s legacy.

Torii Mor Winery started with a vision: the pursuit of elegant, Old World style Pinot Noir. Dr Donald Olson moved to Oregon to pursue this vision and purchased an older vineyard in the Willamette Valley, planted in 1972, and renamed it, Olson Estate Vineyard. High in the Dundee Hills, the ten acres of old vines produce high-quality Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay year after year. Don was drawn to the close ties Pinot Noir has to the earth and its ability to express terroir. The name Torii Mor derives from the Torii gate in the property’s Japanese garden and the ancient Scandinavian word for earth. Together, the name is a nod to Pinot Noir’s expression of terroir and connection to the earth. After the first vintage in 1993 with just 1,000 cases, Torii Mor today produces 10,000 cases annually under the direction of Burgundian winemaker Jacques Tardy. Jacques produces those wines of elegance and balances that Don began pursuing years ago and Torii Mor continues to pursue elegance in winemaking, respect for the earth, and balanced wines that can be enjoyed for years to come.

Silver Springs is a small winery with a rich family history. The Zuccarino surname originates from Udine, a community in northeastern Italy, found above Venice in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. The family ascended to the ranks of Nobility in 1320 C.E., when thereafter several Count Zuccarino’s emerged, helping to shape Italy. The legendary family passion for fine wine and vineyards has been passed down from generation to generation. The tradition continues–our vineyard on Seneca Lake, NY naturally has a climate similar to that of the Italian vineyards. And so, we proudly bring you over 700 years of family passion, as the legend continues.

Our vineyards are farmed organically by our own full-time team. Having our own team enables some of the most significant winemaking actions of the year to be made in a focused, adaptive, and timely manner. Most importantly, this control over the vineyards allows us to learn from the cycles of each season and alter our techniques to bring out the unique potential of the Estate’s land.

Flying Leap Vineyards was founded in 2010. Initially envisioned as a collaborative small business venture, primarily as a small-scale wine grape farming operation, the Company began in earnest developing what would later become its Block 1 vineyard in a small, rural agricultural growing area south of Willcox, Arizona known as the “Kansas Settlement”. These initial vines were planted in April 2011, and developed & trellised over three full growing seasons.

Our vineyard and winery represents the culmination of nearly 6 years of hard work, patience, and persistence. Since 2001, our dream and vision has been to build a small San Diego mountain winery in Warner Springs that offers an incredibly intimate wine tasting experience. In April 2008 our dream became a reality as we proudly opened Hawk Watch Winery to the public. Our wines are hand-crafted from only the finest fruit using hands-on, old world wine making techniques. Each bottle truly represents the excitement and enthusiasm we have for premium wine making, and the passion and obsession we have for viticulture.

George, an Air Force officer, was stationed at Holloman AFB in 1969. A long time family goal, was to return to agriculture after his military career. Rather than return to the Midwest, where both George and Marianne had been raised, they had grown to love the desert and wanted to stay in the Tularosa Basin. The search for a crop that would grow in the desert environment, began. The study of desert crops found that this particular desert had all the same essential elements as the pistachio growing regions of Iran. The decision was made. Pistachios would be the crop!

Established in 2001, Colcanyon Estate Wines were amongst the early entrants in the up and coming Santa Monica Mountain wineries. Located 2000 feet above Malibu, the vineyard is situated on a south facing slope with uninterrupted views of the Pacific Ocean. Our location is as near to perfect for grape growing as it gets. We enjoy a rocky topsoil and a 45 degree south facing slope – the end result are vines that are optimally positioned for even sun exposure throughout the growing period. The yard benefits from early morning mists that rise up the canyon from the Pacific Ocean immediately below – nature’s irrigation system that means we add little additional irrigation even in the hottest of summers.

Wildlife Ridge Winery started out as a dream for Kristy and Kevin Long that turned into a reality March 1, 2013. As our love for wine grew, we decided to build a 3.5-acre lake on our 98-acre farm, along with a facility for wine tastings, wine, and gift sales. Wildlife Ridge Winery is currently the only winery in Pettis County and we are very proud to be a part of the community. We started out making small amounts of wine and have now turned our business into a 7,500 gallon a year winery operation.

The grapes for Bridge Lane wines are grown sustainably on Lieb’s estate vineyard and sourced from some of the best vineyard sites in New York State. We grow (and find) the good stuff! Bridge Lane produces 6 wines – a white merlot, unoaked chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, dry rosé, red blend and a sparkler – all in a fresh, light, dry, fruit-forward style. The wines aren’t meant to be studied and drunk in fancy glasses. They’re meant for casual sipping and sharing with friends. BYE, wine snobs.

In the case of Dr. Charles Thomas, founder of Chateau Thomas Winery, the answer to that question is lots and lots of wine: 15,000 cases of wine each year to be exact, accounting for some 50 varietals. It wasn’t easy to reach that impressive statistic. Before opening the winery in 1984, the doctor studied the finest French wines he could track down, took formal winemaking and tasting classes, and studied with some of Napa Valley’s renowned winemakers. Today, the Thomas team stays committed to exceptional standards.

My career in the wine industry began as a summer job. During that first harvest, my job was to deliver five tons of grapes at a time, down the mountain, in a one-ton truck. It was from that experience that I knew I wanted to be a winemaker. I began my professional career with Kenwood Vineyards in 1986, where we specialized in vineyard-designated Zinfandels and Cabernets grown in Sonoma Valley. In 1998, I left my position as Cellarmaster for Kenwood and joined the wine-making team at Benziger Family Winery, just down the road in Glen Ellen. My focus was the production of wines for the Benziger Family Ranch including Tribute, Imagery Estate and Benziger vineyard designates, and in particular the Zinfandel wines for Benziger and Imagery Estate. It was at Benziger that I was introduced to biodynamics and organic farming. At the time, both practices were new to the industry and we developed winemaking methods to go along with the farming practices.

Snipes Mountain was named after cattle king Ben Snipes, one of the first settlers of the Yakima Valley. In the 1850’s he located his vast cattle business headquarters on the south side of Snipes Mountain, the highest point in the Valley, providing a panoramic view of the Yakima Valley and his vast herds of cattle. The mountain also provided a little more protection from the elements of Mother Nature than the rest of the valley. In 1917 William B. Bridgman, two-time mayor of Sunnyside and author of many of the Yakima Valley’s irrigation laws, planted vinifera wine grapes on Snipes Mountain and, earlier, had planted table grapes on Harrison Hill, an extension of Snipes Mountain. Bridgman anticipated the eventual increase in wine grape demand in spite of prohibition, continued to plant more, and in 1934 opened Upland Winery, the first winery in eastern Washington. Due to financial constraints, he was forced to sell the winery in 1960 and in 1972 it was closed. Bridgman’s vineyards and wine production influenced Dr. Walter Clore, often referred to as the “Father of Washington Wine”. Dr. Clore was essential to the development of the wine industry to its the current state.

Buckingham Valley was one of the first wineries started under Pennsylvania’s Farm Winery Act, which allowed wineries to sell wine directly to the public if it was made from Pennsylvania grapes. Today Buckingham Valley is among the largest and most successful of Pennsylvania’s two hundred plus wineries. The winery started as a pipe dream in a dorm room at the University of Pennsylvania back in the fifties. Jerry Forest and his good friend Wladimir Guerrero would play guitars, drink wine, and dream of doing one or the other for a living. They decided they’d have a better chance of success making wine. The two, with the help of family and many friends, planted five acres in 1966, and renewed their guitar playing and wine drinking as they planned to start a winery.

We’ve been making wine here for more than 40 years. Our winery sits on the original five acres that established Napa Cellars winery in 1976 along historic Highway 29 in Oakville. We still welcome guests to our tasting room in the geodesic dome commissioned by founder Charlie Woods. And we tip our hats to the prominent Napa families, from the Franks to the Rombauers, who graced our cellar during its storied early days. Today, we carve our own path, building on that rich heritage to craft wines that are a classic, unmistakable interpretation of Napa Valley.

Set at 2600 feet on Loma Prieta Way off the Summit Road exit of Highway 17, Loma Prieta is named after the flat-topped mountain that towers to the southeast. It is here, in the shadow of this iconic peak known for being the epicenter of the 1989 earthquake that bears its name, that you will find one of the most beautiful wineries in all of the Santa Cruz Mountains.
