Stable Ridge winery is a cute little wine shop that is filled to the rim with wine merchandise for sale. While I do enjoy wine trinkets, the sheer number distracted from what should be the focus of a winery, the wines. The wines were decent and the service was very friendly. The highlight was the Port, which was nicely balanced.

It all started several years ago when we got married and found that perfect Texas hill country ranch. Those three square meals a day sure were good. It wasn’t long before we noticed our britches were fitting tighter. Even our ol’ranch dog was gaining weight and having a heck of a time jumping into the back of the pickup. One day when we were out feeding horses, we noticed our donkey Jackson, was as big as some of the horses! That’s when we looked at each other and decided that we lived on the Fat Ass Ranch.

Located just north of Napa Valley, Lake County is a prestigious up-and-coming wine growing area with incredible potential. The rugged topography, high elevation, warm climate, and clean air make it a prime growing region for aromatic white wines like Sauvignon Blanc – and a variety of styles from round and soft to lean and sharp, showcasing the incredible range of Sauvignon Blanc aromas and flavors…zingy citrus, crisp apple, lush melon, tropical pineapple, dry minerality, green herbs, and even freshly cut grass.

It was the dream of our founder, Dr. Herodotus “Dan” Damianos, that helped create the winemaking industry on Long Island in the early 1980’s. In 1994 he and his son, Alexander, founded Duck Walk Vineyards. The Chateau-style building in Water Mill, a true Hamptons landmark, became home to what has quickly evolved into one of the most well-known names in Long Island wine. Duck Walk Vineyards has two locations – the flagship winery is located in Southampton, New York. In 2007 we added a new location on the North Fork of Long Island. Surrounded by 30 beautiful acres of Sauvignon Blanc grape vines, Duck Walk Vineyards North is an ideal location to taste Duck Walk’s renowned wines while visiting Long Island’s famous Wine Trail. Like poetry, good wine can be an emotional experience, lifting the spirits and delighting the senses as it satisfies the soul.

Seth Kunin started Kunin Wines in 1998, focusing on Syrah, Zinfandel and Viognier. Over the years he added additional Rhone and Loire Valley varieties such as Grenache, Mourvedre, Rousanne, Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc and, more importantly, his wife and business partner Magan and their daughter Phoebe. Kunin continues to be a family concern and is governed more by the passions and personalities of the Kunins than those of the critics or marketplace.

THESE GRAPES WERE RAISED SIDE-BY-SIDE IN WEST TEXAS WHERE THE CLIMATE IS WELL SUITED TO DEVELOP THE BEAUTIFUL CHARACTER OF THESE HARDY VARIETIES. PAYING HOMAGE TO THE GROWER AND THE VINTAGE, WE CHOSE TO MANIPULATE NOTHING. HAND HARVESTED, FERMENTED ON THE SKINS, NATIVE YEAST. NO SULPHUR OR ACID ADDED. THIS LOW INTERVENTION APPROACH LETS YOU TASTE THE STORY WRITTEN BY THE VINTAGE, NOT THE VINTNER. 11.5% ABV

Nella Terra means “In to the Earth” in Italian. The company was named and started with the intention of building a wine cave and we hope to someday see this legacy come to fruition. We are focused on the land and soil, studying the ritual of the vines to create quality estate grown fruit. We sit above the Livermore Valley in the Sunol Highlands at 1,100 ft getting a maritime breeze off of the San Francisco Bay creating a generally cooler climate than the rest of the Livermore Valley AVA. Native stone was used to create the grand staircase through the vineyards to our event area, if you look closely, you’ll see small seashells embedded in the rocks when the area was all under water thousands of years ago adding to our unique terroir.

Originally farmers in Ireland, his family settled in the Midwest – first in Iowa and then in Minnesota. While Tom, a third-generation physician, farming was always a source of pride for the family, who valued its legacy of hard work and a closeness with the land. He headed to the University of Minnesota Medical School, after which he conducted his residency at the renowned Mayo Clinic. His training honed his strict attention to detail and disciplined approach, both of which influence Kenefick Ranch’s wine 50 years later.

The Forgeron winemaking philosophy remains unchanged since 2001 when our founding winemaker opened Forgeron Cellars in Walla Walla. The principles learned in Burgundy, continue to apply. We uncover the best vineyard sites for our favorite varietals grown in the AVAs of the Columbia Valley, then gently guide the winemaking process to deliver wines that fully express the beauty, complexity, and age-worthiness the region has to offer.

It was my first visit to France, savoring a rosé from the Cahors region, made from the then-unheralded Malbec, that compelled me to create one of California’s first Malbec Rosé wines. In a similar way, personal introductions to small vineyards that are family owned and farmed inspired me to focus my own portfolio on Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Syrah and a proprietary blend we call Cuvèe Americaine.

Our wines are made from a variety of grapes found throughout Pennsylvania. We work with our partner vineyards, taking great care and effort to only use the best fruit available for our wines. Grapes are tested for proper ripeness before hand picking. They are then crushed and processed within hours of picking. This great care and effort is absolutely necessary to produce fine wines.

Martine Saunier was born in Paris. Although she lived and attended school there, she spent every summer vacation at her aunt’s home in Prissé, near Mâcon. Her aunt owned a winery with approximately 10 acres of vineyards planted with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The winemaker lived in the farm next door with his wife and children. The pinnacle of the summer vacation was the harvest time. By the age of 10, Martine was fascinated with the preparation of the cellar, the wine press, the fermenting vats and, of course, being part of the harvesting team. The crushing of the grapes, malolactic fermentation, bottling, etc. were all part of her childhood.

A dark smoky perfume of soaked violet and half-chewed pink bubble gum, it will penetrate into your psyche in a way that is explainable only by those who have studied it with the confidence of a master. A piquancy that bursts with a sudden pop of light, like lightning breaking the sky for a split second, it reverts back to the brooding flavors of ripe dark cherries and wet bark that it knows so well.

Some of the first, family ancestors arrived in California in 1835 where they settled in the town of Lockeford. Our great grandfather, Herman Walter Ehlers, began his education in wine, in 1921, working at the “National Fruit Product Company” which later became the Shewan-Jones Winery in Lodi. His first job was moving wine around in the cellar as a young teenager, where he remembers the grapes being brought to the winery by horse and wagon. Eight years later, Herman Ehlers became a winemaker for Shewan-Jones.

If we are going to make wine, we are going to make the finest wine we possibly can, was our founding philosophy when starting the Farfalla Winery. That’s why we traveled extensively, finding the best grapes available in America. We feel a special kinship with the California grapes. Their fine quality and flavor are superior to most areas in the world. Hence our relationship with a family owned vineyard in Lodi, California.

Vintage after vintage, we produce a deep ruby red Syrah with structures including deep and complex aromas such as blackberry, plum, licorice, and hints of chocolate. The length of our growing season produces mature tannins that are soft but significant, providing an excellent structure and mouthfeel. The medium finish brings boysenberry, blackberry, black cherry, dark chocolate, hints of black pepper and underlying layers of earth and mineral flavors.

Regal Road Winery is a very small Washington State Winery specializing in Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. All our wines are made and bottled here, by us, from grapes grown on our 80 acre estate, Red Hawk Ranch, located on the beautiful Moran Prairie, only a short distance from downtown Spokane. We started planting the vineyard in 2000, initially experimenting with a number of cool weather vinifera varieties. After several years it became clear that we could successfully grow Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris grapes and make very good wine. Jeanne and Steve Schaub are the proprietors with Steve doing most of the vineyard and wine making and Jeanne handling marketing and promotion as well as participating in production. In addition to being our home, Red Hawk Ranch is home to many creatures, great and small, wild and domesticated. We see all sorts of birds and fowl here, and our property derived it’s name from the many Red Tail Hawks that help keep the rodent population down. Turkey flocks, numerous deer, occasional moose, black bear and even cougar visit us here. Over the years we have boarded many horses and raised cattle on the property and of course have enjoyed […]

In 2008, William and Nancy Kimsey established a small, 22-acre vineyard in the Ballard Canyon appellation of Santa Barbara County. The development of this vineyard was a purposeful one. Devotees of pleasurable, cerebral wines, Bill and Nancy had long searched for a site amenable to growing grape varieties they found most compelling; namely several found in the Rhone region of France; syrah, grenache, viognier, and roussanne. Today, the Kimsey estate vineyard terroir has proven itself cordial to these enduring varieties.

Our wines are produced in an “Old World” European style. We produce red wines that are dark in color, smooth, and rich in flavor from aging in oak barrels for a minimum of 2 years. Our white wines are produced with yeasts to bring out the full flavors of the grape and we lightly filtered to preserve those flavors. We produce approximately 1200 cases of wine each year. Because of the wide range of products we make, our production of each type of wine is small, generally around 100 cases of each. The goal is to be able to hand craft each wine with a balance between structure, acidity and flavor. Our other goal is to produce wines that are of a unique character. These choices are reflected in the process we use during production, the yeast selections we make and in some wines, the varietal blending we do.

Ken Starr learned the art of making wine by his father’s side in 1952. When stationed in Europe in the early 60’s, Ken visited many wineries and appreciated the German style of wine making. He started making wine on his own from 1966 to 1977. In 1994, he purchased property in Curwensville, Pennsylvania and planted 12 vines. By 1998, there were 3000 vines… Concord, Niagara, Traminette, Foch and Leon Millot. He built a winery in 1998 and started making wine again. The wine was good prompting him to go commercial in 2005. Starr decided to start making his wine commercially. Starr Hill Vineyard & Winery located on 13 acres in Clearfield County produces over 40 varieties of our Handcrafted Wines for Perfect Moments.

Located in the heart of the Willamette Valley, Panther Creek Cellars has been producing signature Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay wines since 1986. The winery has been recognized for its signature blends as well as single vineyard designate wines. “Panther Creek has a storied history and I’m eager to build on that legacy,” says Tony Rynders, winemaker. “I have been making wine in Oregon for almost 20 years, and I look forward to beginning this chapter with one of Oregon’s most established Pinot Noir producers, founded by one of the wine industry’s great heroes, Ken Wright.” Our goal, in making Panther Creek wine, is simple: We hope that each wine will express the personality of its vintage and character of its vineyard. This expressiveness is the essence of great Oregon Pinot Noir. Our wines are crafted to complement a variety of foods, as well as be enjoyed on their own. We believe that great Pinot Noir can be enjoyed as a young, fresh wine that showcases ripe, sweet fruit, as well as an older, mature wine that features unparalleled complexity and beauty.

A love for wine and a passion for the history of the area helped turn the dream of owning a vineyard into a reality. In March 2005, Bob and Lou Ann Nolan purchased 84 acres of land in Augusta, Missouri and began to transform it into the winery you see today. Four varieties of Missouri grapes; Chambourcin, Traminette, Norton and Vignoles, were planted and now grace the hills of the estate.

Wine is constructed from many alternative grape varieties. The apparent precision of the measurements, and the impact of Parker’s judgments on consumers’ choices, tempt winemakers to intention toward such requirements, but his ratings can contradict the elusive, particular person quality of wine. Of the extra common grape varieties, Pinot Noir produces wines with the highest common resveratrol ranges.

Mead… the sacred drink of men and gods alike, brewed from honey believed to have descended from the Heavens as dew then gathered in by bees. With hints of berries, pears, apples and grassy fields, Mead is the ancient drink of kings and poets – ascribed with bringing poetry, virility and wit. The gods, from Mount Olympus to Valhalla, were believed to drink mead – garnering from it strength, poetry and passion. Mead, or honeywine, is an ancient form of winemaking, with roots throughout Europe, Africa and Asia. Our goal at Sky River Mead is to reintroduce the world to exquisite mead and honey wine, all while making them more approachable and food friendly. From ancient cultures on distant shores, shrouded in mist, Sky River brings the age-old art of making mead into the twenty-first century to create a new tradition. Sky River Meads, lighter and dryer than their ancient counterparts, balance beautifully with the foods of today, from around the world – curries and chutneys, salsa’s and ginger. Sky River Meadery is a woman-owned Washington winery and is proud to be among the older wineries in state. It began in 1997 nestled in the rugged foothills of Stevens Pass in […]

Dionysus’ mortal mother, Semele, was so beautiful that Zeus could not keep from spending many evenings with her away from his wife Hera. Hera took her revenge on his lust by putting in Semele’s mind the demand to see her lover Zeus in his true form, as God, and not disguised as her handsome night visitor. Semele held her affections one night until Zeus pledged an oath on the river Styx to grant whatever she requested; the next morning she awaited her lover’s promise. Hera knew no mortal would live once they saw God unveiled. Sadly, Zeus fulfilled his solemn pledge and Semele instantly died. But Zeus snatched from her womb the unborn product of their joy, Dionysus. Hiding the fetus from Hera in his thigh was possible for only a short time. He gave the child to Hermes to hide away in Nysa, a land of mythic beauty, where seven nymphs of divine descent (Ambrosia, Eudora, Phaisyle, Koronis, Polyxo, and Thyone) raised the half god to manhood.

Owners Joe Grant and Doris Wood, both natives of the valley, use only Walla Walla appellation grapes in crafting their wines. Committed to focusing on quality rather than quantity, they (with occasional help from friends) work each stage of the process from checking on the grapes in the vineyards up to pouring in their tasting room. The result is a limited production of complex, full-bodied, and very affordable wines, available only on site. Prices for visitors to the winery are comparable to wholesale prices at larger wineries.

Established in 2005, Carolina Heritage Vineyard and Winery is a 35-acre farm three miles east of Elkin, North Carolina, along HWY 268 in the middle of the Yadkin Valley Viticultural area. Founders Clyde and Pat Colwell share a passion for farming and the environment, having both grown up in rural areas of the country. Clyde spent his childhood in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State surrounded by beautiful vineyards, and his wife Pat was raised in Northern Wisconsin in dairy and potato country. After successful careers in other fields, both decided to pursue a long-held dream of owning their own farm. From childhood Clyde had had a desire to establish a vineyard and winery and Pat had long been focused on the importance a clean environment to life. Combining their knowledge and passions, the husband-and-wife team completed degrees in Viticulture and Enology from Surry Community College, established the first USDA-Certified Organic vineyard and winery in North Carolina on Highway 268 in Surry County and began to make their own wines. After 11 years, their grapes and blueberries are flourishing and so are their dreams of establishing an environmentally-friendly wine establishment!

We believe nature sets in motion many complex and interwoven elements that affect every vineyard with distinct characteristics. These influences are sometimes subtle, other times less so, but always worthy of note. When given an opportunity to express themselves, they will convey a unique sense of origin to a wine. This is what we labor to encourage.

Snowgrass Winery, the first premium winery in the Entiat Valley of Washington State, is located on the Entiat River, a tributary of the Columbia, that flows from the Glacier Peak Wilderness. Owners Alan Moen and Susan Kidd, both visual artists and writers, bought the property in 1999 and planted a vineyard the following year. The winery was licensed in 2008 and opened in the spring of 2009. Snowgrass specializes in the production of fully-bodied red wines and aromatic dry roses. All Snowgrass wines are unfiltered for maximum flavor. The winery uses sustainable methods to grow grapes. Sheep graze in the vineyard and they, along with the goats and chickens, renew the soil.

Thank you for visiting Saxon Brown Wines. We are a small Sonoma Valley winery, specializing in single vineyard bottlings of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, and Semillon from special sites discovered as a consulting winemaker for top Napa and Sonoma wine labels. For us, winemaking is storytelling. A restrained and respectful hand in the cellar results in a more interesting, character-driven narrative in the bottle. Named for the willful heroine of Jack London’s Valley of the Moon (Sonoma Valley), Saxon Brown wines tell the stories of our favorite vineyard sites.

Dry Mill Vineyards & Winery is snuggled into nine rolling acres just one mile outside historic Leesburg in a stable and barn that was once home to the horses and dogs of the Loudoun Hunt Club. Owners Dean and Nancy Vanhuss, with their daughter Michelle Pizzarello, have carefully restored it, using nearly all of the original wood to keep the spirit of the stable intact and give the winery a distinct rustic feel. Exposed wood beams, a tin roof, sconces, and a fireplace give the winery an updated and warm feeling. The original large wooden storm shutters now slide past the winery’s French doors, and the loft has two balconies overlooking the attractive grounds. The patio seats up to 30 people for wine tasting and light fare. For Dean Vanhuss, winemaking is a retirement venture after a career in technology. He has been growing grapes in Loudoun since the late 1990s and currently has six acres planted, most at Short Hill Vineyards, their home in Lovettsville. In 1984 Bob and Betty McKinney cleared the property that is now known as Elhanan Vineyard, planting some of the original Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris vines in the South Willamette Valley. Over the next ten years they planted a total of 20,000 vines on a 35-acre plot. The vineyard is rooted in Jory and Willakenzie soils, and sits on a southeast facing slope with a peak elevation of 700 feet. The vineyard consists of the following varietals: 7 acres – White Riesling, 13 acres – Pinot Gris, 12 acres – Pinot Noir, 2 acres – Early Muscat, and 1 acre – Gewurztraminer. Chris and Erin Sarver are originally from Michigan. They moved to Oregon in 2007 in pursuit of their dreams of making wine. Chris and Erin are longtime owners of the Lake Superior Brewing Company in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and used their brewing and restaurant experience to launch their new endeavour: making boutique, expressive wines in the acclaimed Willamette Valley. Fast forward to 2019 and the winery is bustling with a lively tasting room, a 5,000 square foot winery where a multitude of fine wines are carefully tended to, and a glorious vista from which to […]

Avanguardia does not much use the more common varietals, like Cabernet, Zinfandel, or Chardonnay. Our flagship white wine, CRISTALLO, features a grape from the former Soviet Republic of Georgia in Eastern Europe. Our most unique red, AMPIO, combines the UC-patented cross Carmine with the NE Italian Refosco for a taste sensation that is uniquely different. Our newest blend, TRE “T”, after the three international varieties used(Teroldego, Tempranillo, and Tannat) is a wine of deep color and great substance, already recognized with Gold at the San Francisco Chronicle competition. Our emphasis is always on balance, with just the right amount of alcohol, acidity, tannin or oak, avoiding contemporary trends towards excess in these areas; in some ways our wines are more like Europe than California.

This is a very expressive wine aromatically, with lychee, cranberry, kola, raspberry, red cherries abounding with hints of cinnamon and clove, wildflower honey, and cacao. Flavors of red fruits including pomegranate are accented by wisps of cedar and a hint of leather. This wine has a bright, food-friendly profile. This wine is ready to drink now and should drink well for the next three to five years.

Most wine is made with grapes, but they’re not like the ones you find in the grocery store. Wine grapes (latin name: Vitis vinifera) are smaller, sweeter, have thick skins, and contain seeds. There are over 1,300 wine grape varieties used in commercial production but only about 100 of these varieties make up 75% of the world’s vineyards.

For Eric, winemaking has become his passion and believes it is the perfect blending of art and science. Though the winemaking process is very similar year to year, every vintage is different and has it’s own characteristics and challenges. He enjoys watching the wines develop throughout the year from angular and one dimensional to plush and broad flavored and only gently guiding them through the process.

In 2007, the Owera Vineyards 57-acre farm was purchased at the north end of Cazenovia Lake. The vision was to create a legacy project that would bring community and families and together for casual gatherings and special occasions. Owera was conceived by and for family, and that feeling of family extends to every guest and each employee at Owera Vineyards. As with many start-up vineyards, their wine-making operation started with small beginnings. The first official crush was in 2010. In 2012, ground was broken on a tasting room and wine production facility as well as an event and promotional center to help promote the sale of their wines. That significant undertaking resulted in the Owera you see today, with recent additions of the barn and new barrel room. It’s been a long journey with many unexpected twists and turns along the way. Despite the challenges, every step of the journey has been worthwhile. The old friends and new faces we greet every day at Owera has created a legacy that goes well beyond the buildings, the grounds and the grapes. For us, the vineyard is about more than fine wine, great food and a spectacular setting; it’s about creating a […]

The Indiana Uplands are the remnant of a highly dissected, non-glaciated plateau located in south-central Indiana. The AVA extends approximately from the Monroe County/Morgan County line between Bloomington and Martinsville south to the Ohio River, a distance of roughly 110 miles. It greatest distance east-west is approximately 60 miles. The Indiana Uplands remained free from repeated glacial advances due to the height of the plateau and the southern latitude. Since the Indiana Uplands were not glaciated the topography of the plateau strongly reflects the influence of the bedrock with deep valleys and high ridges common throughout. The bedrock that underlies the Indiana Uplands is composed of alternating layers of limestone, shale and sandstone.
