Entre Deux Mères literally translates from the French as “Between Two Mothers”. Our friendship was initiated by our children and grew through a love of wine, work and play. In September of 2000, we were fortunate enough to secure a few tons of Cabernet Sauvignon from a small grower in Oakville. The grapes were hand picked and sorted, and we crushed and fermented them in small lots. Our little project had begun. Our philosophy of making wine is similar to our philosophy of raising children – give them a lot of tender loving care, nurture always, then let them go on to express themselves and become the unique individuals they were meant to be. We believe that our gentle handling and minimalist intervention in winemaking yields unique wines that are elegant and balanced – a true expression of their roots. Now as we enter our 21st year, our children are all grown up, and our project remains exactly as we envisioned: small, hands on, and honest. Long before the hundreds of travelers, wine-tasters, and oenophiles graced the tables and tasting bars of Fox Run, it was cows that explored the property. For more than a century, Fox Run was a dairy farm. The first grapes were planted in 1984, and in 1990 the Civil War-era dairy barn was converted to a winemaking facility by Larry and Adele Wildrick, the founders of Fox Run Vineyards. In 1994, Scott Osborn and his first business partner, Andy Hale, purchased the winery from the Wildricks. Now with 50 acres of east-facing vineyards on glacial soils, the winery produces a remarkable range of limited-production, estate wines. Since those early days, Scott has been working closely with winemaker Peter Bell, who brings a science-based, rationalist approach to winemaking. The winemaking team aims to achieve full creative expression within each variety of grape, giving Fox Run an abundance of delicious and refreshing wines. This wouldn’t be possible without the prowess of Vineyard Manager, John Kaiser, who has worked the land at Fox Run since 1984, and without the contributions of Assistant Winemaker Lindsey VanKeuren, a Penn Yan native who got her start at Fox Run in 2012.

The motivation for creating Cosmos Cellars came from necessity, as do most new concepts. In 1997, most Napa Valley vintners were faced with the same challenge: a HUGE tannic cabernet. I had to find a way to soften and balance the wine, because I wasn’t about to wait 20 years to start drinking it. So I began exploring what wines from other countries might bring to a blend. And it was a Merlot and South American Malbec that brought me my answer (and a gold medal for this new Meritage). I was amazed by the textures and complexities that could be mastered by blending international varietals.

Our story began thousands of years ago, when a single mountain within the Vaca Range split in two and collapsed, resulting in a rubble field of volcanic core stones that face the setting sun. This Riesling was inspired by the sloped alluvial fans in which these two vineyard sites reside, at the base of the Santa Lucia Mountain Range. The well drained soils of these alluvial fans are a product of water running from the Santa Lucia Mountains down into the Salinas Valley; washing down a buildup of coarse-grained sediment. Both vineyards from where we source have great exposure to the marine influence that is swept down the Salinas Valley every afternoon. The combination of sand, granite and shale loam soils with the ever present marine influence provide the perfect conditions for this wine to develop freshness, complex mineral components and elevated aromatics.

The 30 acres of estate vineyards have been named Shale Rock Vineyards, in reference to the vast shale deposits we have discovered in the soils. They are very rich in turbidites, a type of sedimentary rock composed of layered particles that grade upward from coarser to finer sizes and originated from ancient currents in the oceans. These soils are 10-15 million years old and are world renown for growing the best wines with a smooth, complex mouthfeel. The original vineyards were first planted in 1971. Many of these now look more like small trees than they do vines. Some old trunks have been cut down and replaced with a starter shoot that still shares the old vine’s well-established root system. The vines are farmed using sustainable methods, growing natural grapes in a healthy environment. Beneficial insects and cover crops are used to keep the vines healthy without the use of pesticides, and selected animals are encouraged to live in the vineyards and keep pests away. The estate vineyard was planted in Fallbrook after much debate and research over the vineyard’s location. The decision to plant here was based on the unique growing climate and soil profile in Fallbrook. The dark, red volcanic soils are similar to the famous terra rossa of the Coonawarra region in Australia. Planted at an average elevation of 1100 feet, the vineyard is situated near the Santa Margarita River gap, which provides the daily maritime breezes necessary for slow fruit maturation. In 1976, after working for the New York State government in Albany for eleven years and assisting with the passage of the farm-winery bill, Jim Doolittle (Cornell University – CALS ’67) and Carol Doolittle (Good Counsel College/Pace University ’68) decided that they wanted to have their own winery. “It sounded like fun,” and so they embarked upon an adventure. In 1978, they purchased a promising site with a panoramic view of Cayuga Lake, and planted their first three acres of vines. In 1982, Frontenac Point Vineyard became New York farm-winery #44, producing only 400 cases of wine. Frontenac Point is on the west side of Cayuga Lake, and all of the grapes used to make our wines are grown in the winery’s own 18-acre vineyard, on slopes of low elevation, protected by a microclimate influenced by Ontario and Cayuga Lakes. This provides a long growing season during which the finest grape varieties ripen perfectly to produce world-class wines. The combination of estate-grown grapes, Cazenovia and Aurora silt loam soils, climate, and Frontenac Point’s winemaking techniques produces wines that are truly appellation Cayuga Lake.

Mario has been a partner with the law firm Wilson Sonsini Goodrich and Rosati since 1971. For 17 years, Mario sat on the Board of Directors at Ridge Vineyards in Santa Cruz Mountains. Since 1995, Mario has been an adjunct professor at the University of California at Berkeley’s Haas School of Business, where he teaches new venture finance. Mario has sat as a judge pro tem in the San Mateo County Superior Court in the State of California. He also participated in the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Task Force to the office of the President Elect, Ronald Reagan. For more than twenty-five years Crane Family Vineyards has been growing grapes and making wine in the Napa Valley. Our hillside vineyard, the Don Raffaele Estate, is nestled on the instep of Mount Veeder. The microclimate of our small valley is one of the best kept secrets in the Napa Valley. Its terroir is similar to the well-respected vineyards of the Pomerol region of Bordeaux, imparting intense and unique flavors to the grapes grown here. The Don Raffaele Estate was named for my grandfather, who made wine many years ago and was an avid horticulturist; and the Crane Family brand was named for my late mother’s family. Making great wine has become a tradition in our family, and it is my great pleasure to carry on that tradition and to share our wines with you.

In the eighties, after consuming a fair amount of White Zinfandel (Twin Hills, Mastantuano, etc), Angela and Darren Mitchell were converted by a bottle of 1987 Eberle Cabernet Sauvignon and their passionate quest for fine red wine began. In 1993, Darren frustrated by the high cost of their new hobby, decided to take a winemaking class taught by local Zinfandel legend, Charles Poalillo, at Cuesta Community College. What began as an attempt to save money, developed into a quest for more knowledge of wine and production, more classes (at UC Davis, Allan Hancock, Aspen School of Wine, Copia, and Cal Poly), investments in equipment and supplies, and finally, the shift back to Darren’s farming roots, a vineyard of their own.
