The Zmarzlys own and operate the mountain vineyard. Fred and Alberta Zmarzly, owners of Albertina Wine Cellars and Zmarzly Family Vineyards, hope that you enjoy browsing through this website. Information on the vineyard, winery and the wine being produced is presented so that you may become more familiar with the wines. All of our wines are estate bottled, with hand-picked grapes from our own mountain vineyard. The thin soils of our mountain vineyard force the vines to continuously struggle, producing smaller berries with more intense flavors and color. The low yields of 3 tons per acre result in concentrated fruit flavors. The Zmarzlys own and operate the mountain vineyard, with Penny Gadd Coster as their winemaker.. Picnic in the Vineyard You are invited to have a picnic in our vineyard during designated weekend dates in May, June, July, August and September. You bring your picnic, and we’ll supply the wines and refreshments. Dennis and Nancy Parr have a passion for nurturing and growing plants. Dennis grew up in a farming family in Janesville, Wisconsin. Nancy was raised in a gardening-fishing-hunting family in Kalispell, MT.In 2001 both went nuts and grew Giant Pumpkins and transported them to competitions in Oregon and in western Washington for official weigh-offs. Dennis’s top pumpkin weighed in at 780 lbs and Nancy’s weighed in at 685 lbs. After the competitions were finished they brought them back to Moses Lake, hollowed them out, attached electric motors and invited their friends and the community to Pumpkin Regatta on Moses Lake. Watching grown adults dressed in pirate costumes maneuvering giant pumpkins on the lake generated much delight in the community and in the press for a few years. The owners then chose to plant wine grapes because they wished to work their land, utilizing the acreage plus the idea of growing grapes had a romantic appeal to the wine lovers. Since 1995, Dos Cabezas WineWorks has been growing grapes and producing wines in Southern Arizona. Originally located in Kansas Settlement, the winery and 80 acres of vineyard were pioneered by the late visionary, Al Buhl. Todd Bostock joined the team as winemaker in 2002 and by the end of 2006, the Bostock family took over operations of the winery, and it was moved to Sonoita where it resides today. He graduated from the University of Tennessee- Chattanooga, where he had a four-year basketball scholarship as well as Masters Degrees from IU and Indiana State. He taught at Lookout Mountain Jr. High, TN, Troy, IN, Hoosier Heights Jr. High and Tell City High School until he ended up in prison…where he taught (got you there for a minute, didn’t I?). Before he retired in 2007, he was the Education Administrator at Branchville Correctional Center.

As a native of Bernkastel, Germany who emigrated to the Finger Lakes in the 1960s, Hermann J. Wiemer was uniquely qualified to help establish and create a wine region now known for its Riesling identity. His mother’s family had been making wine in Germany’s Mosel Valley for more than 300 years. His father, a skilled nurseryman, had been in charge of the Agricultural Experiment Station in Bernkastel and was responsible for restoring vines in the Mosel region after WWII. As a result, he recognized the importance of grafting vinifera on American rootstock. Ultimately, this conviction led Hermann’s father to convince Dr. Thanisch – who maintained the most famous Riesling vineyard in the world – to graft Mosel Rieslings onto American rootstock. In 2003, Hermann’s long-term apprentice Fred Merwarth took charge of winemaking and vineyard management. Fred’s talent and ambition brought fresh energy and vision to the winery, placing it on a new trajectory. In 2007, Hermann officially retired, handing over the winery to Fred, who partnered with his university friend, Swedish agronomist Oskar Bynke, to carry on Hermann’s legacy.

Our story at Stever Hill Vineyards begins with a family farm on the hills above the north shore of the west branch of Keuka Lake. The Tones family founded Clearview Farms in 1951 to grow corn and hay, and raise dairy cows. The original farm included 10 acres of vineyard. When third generation brothers Harold, Don, and Jim decided to join the family business, it was on one condition: no more cows! It was 1958 and major Finger Lakes wineries such as Taylor and Widmer were increasing production by tapping local growers to supply grapes. The Tones family added six acres of concord grapes and expanded the vineyard year after year, adding acreage and grapevines to help meet the demands of the growing Finger Lakes wine industry.

Bone-chilling winters, late spring frosts, and wet summers are all unfavorable to grapevines – at least the kind that come from Europe. But there are many species of grapes that are native to this continent and therefore more tempered to our climates. Grown in their native form or crossed with the vinifera species, many grape varieties and hybrids exist today that are not only hardy but very suited to winemaking. Scientists are starting to think that cool and humid climates may even stimulate production of the grape’s micronutrients most beneficial to humans.

The beginning of our winery story is similar to so many others in our industry: a hobby that went out of control! Kevin began making wine in his basement shortly after college. Prior to making it, Kevin rarely drank wine, but he was quickly consumed by the wine culture. On 30 acres of carefully tended vines, we grow 14 varieties of grapes. If you visit early in June, you will catch the luscious fragrance of the grape blossoms, with the tender young grape leaves unfurling. Through the spring and summer, the vineyard staff is busy tying the expanding vines onto their arbors and removing unneeded clusters. With Mother Nature’s cooperation, the first plump juicy grapes are ready for harvest by early September. The juice that ultimately becomes Nissley estate-bottled wine is pressed from grapes brought into the winery fresh from the vineyards. To complement our own harvest, we purchase select fruits, grapes and juice from other growers in Pennsylvania.

I mentioned last week how I enjoy Robby’s Blend with plum dishes. Well, now I am craving a glass! Every wine has a story and this wine has many. My favorite was the first one, when we hadn’t even blended it yet. I had made 25 blends and numbered them blindly and had Robert with two of his friends one evening try them and rate them. It was one of the top three. (2011 Renaissance by Reyes Les Dex Rois and 2011 Julia were the other two) Then a few weeks later, I took the top three blends and 22 different and had them taste again. The same three winners won again. How could we not put that in a bottle? Nine years later, it is one of our favorite wines. I always hear that everyone loves Robby’s Blend.

Everyone said we were crazy when we gave up our jobs (teaching and pharmaceutical sales) to open a winery. They were right in a way, because we are crazy about what we do. It all started with a trip to the Finger Lakes region of New York. There, we fell in love with grape growing and wine making. We decided to try it on our own here in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. So, we planted six varieties of grapes on our driveway’s split rail fence. When those 70 vines flourished, we cleared about four-acres of our six-acre property to plant a vineyard. It took about six years before we had enough grapes to start our business. We opened our Pocono winery on September 1, 2009, our 20th Wedding Anniversary. It wasn’t long before Randy thought, “If it’s this much fun to own a vineyard and winery, how much more fun would it be to have a vineyard, winery and distillery?” We opened our Pocono distillery on Labor Day Weekend in 2013, the same weekend we celebrated the 4th anniversary of the winery and our 24th wedding anniversary.
