The vineyard is located in an area with soils and climate perfect for growing premium wine grapes. Soils rich in limestone and shale balanced with loams and clay provide good drainage and proper nutrients for growing grape vines. The ranch is located on hills that slope gently from the north to the south, giving the vines the perfect exposure to the summer sun as it rises and sets in the El Pomar district. Light afternoon winds blow through the vines providing good airflow through the canopy for proper ripening. As the sun sets, the onshore winds flow from the Pacific Ocean cooling the vineyard to night temperatures in the 50°s. The 40°-50° daily temperature swings allow the fruit to cool at night, lengthening the ripening process to intensify the flavor and allowing the seeds to mature, providing proper tannin and flavors. The Augusta region was nationally known for its wine during the 19th century, but Prohibition halted the state’s winemaking for decades. Tapteil Vineyard was first planted in the spring of 1985 and now totals 25 acres of three varieties–Cabernet Sauvignon (15.5 acres), Cabernet Franc (2.0 acres) and Merlot (7.5 acres). The vineyard lies between 740 and 880 feet in elevation on predominately silt loam soil. Site selection had a basic focal point – find the best site at which to grow Cabernet Sauvignon. This site, together with careful vineyard management, provides wine grapes of exceptional quality and shows why Red Mountain has continued to be the source for high quality wines. The name “Tapteil” comes from the Sahaptian (the language of the Yakama Indians) term for “narrow” and refers to the narrow portion of the Yakima River as it flows south and east of Yakima. The term Tapteilmin or “narrow river people” was used to identify those living along this portion of the Yakima River.

White Buck Vineyard and Winery lies just past downtown Morganfield. Kentucky’s newest winery, White Buck has transformed a former recycling station into a fully functioning winery complete with tasting room- now open five days a week (Tuesday-Saturday). As I stroll through the acres of trellised vineyards with owners Carla and Dr. Allen White, their passion for the business is apparent. Allen explains each variety planted and his plans to expand the vineyard. He tells me about the wines he is crafting and those he anticipates making for future vintages. Once back in the comforts of Air Conditioning, Carla flips through photos of the property snapped prior to the White’s extensive renovations. The winery in its current state is nearly unrecognizable. Where refuse once littered the disused concrete floors now lie rows of American Oak barrels and a newly constructed climate controlled tank room.

Alfred Natali is the winemaker, viticulturalist and founder of Natali Vineyards. Before becoming a winemaker, Al taught European History at the City University of New York and then worked on Wall Street as a network engineer. Trella Vineyards was established by the Williams family in 2011. After moving to Roseburg in 2007, the family began making friends with local winemakers and grew to appreciate the potential of the Umpqua Valley. They rapidly evolved from wine neophytes to enthusiastic consumers, and eventually caught the fever for winegrowing. An 80 acre hillside parcel at the base of the Callahan Mountains was slowly tamed and a small vineyard was planted by hand in 2012. A second planting was made in 2013. With help from all three generations of the family and handfuls of sympathetic friends, Trella Vineyards grew to seven acres of vines. Terry Brandborg of Brandborg Winery became the winemaker in 2015 and his award-winning expertise yielded spectacular Trella wines.

When the settlers returned to their mounts, the horses had been badly eaten by horseflies, and the spot was consequently named Fly Gap. The exact coordinates of The Undisclosed Location are classified and attempting to locate it would be highly ill-advised. However, we now offer tasting at a minimum security location in Paso Robles. Unofficially, we refer to this location as The Tasting Room. In order to avoid attracting attention, The Tasting Room is located in a small rustic building in the Willow Creek district of the Paso Robles AVA. In-keeping with the local geography, The Tasting Room is surrounded by rolling hills and vineyards and can be accessed only by a dusty lane. Outward appearances would suggest it is little more than a quaint, rustic wine tasting venue in Paso Robles’ rural Westside. Appearances can be deceiving.

David and Beth Ponce, residents of Carbondale since 1985 founded Monte Alegre Farm in 1987. Originally a horse training and breeding operation the farm grew its own hay and row crops but had three very old vines. Those vines were determined to be Fredonia and were totally adapted for the southern Illinois habitat and for years they made rose‘ wines and sangria from them. In the early 1990’s the Ponces met the Renzaglia family who had been instrumental in the rebirth of the grape and wine industry in Illinois. This led to planting of a commercial vineyard in 1996. The first varietals planted were Chambourcin and Vidal Blanc quickly followed by Chardonel, Norton-Cynthiana, Frontenac, Cabernet Franc, Sangiovese and Seyval Blanc. Table grapes like Reliance and Mars were also added in addition to the propagation by cloning of the original Fredonia grapes present in the homestead.

Fermentation took place in one small stainless steel tank at 50-58F for 45 days before completion. The use of Bandolyeast in the winemaking process imparts a delicious Provencal nuance to the wine.

This site, previously referred to as “Pneumonia Gulch” by the early settlers, has proven to be ideal for growing Pinot noir and the wine has qualities similar to the Pinot noir’s found in Burgandy, France.
