In October of 2014 Robin and Valerie Coolidge purchased the winery and vineyards. The couple had owned Wyandotte Winery in Columbus for many years. Wyandotte, one of the oldest wineries in Ohio, is land locked, and has no space for vineyards. RockSide was the perfect way for the family to branch out and expand their winery business. Ryan Coolidge also joined the family run business as the General Manager and Assistant Winemaker at Rockside.

Dan Gatlin grew up in the retail beverage trade as his family were the owners & operators of the Hasty chain of wine, spirits and convenience stores in Dallas, Texas. His father, Vernon Gatlin, had worked his way up from Depression Era beginnings after Prohibition. After service in WWII, Vernon Gatlin returned to Dallas and established himself as an astute businessman building the A&A Company to 28 stores, and later, Hasty to 15 convenience and 11 wine & spirits stores under his ownership. Vernon Gatlin died in 1981 and his wife, Virginia, passed away in 1988.

For 30 years, John and Rose Guinan lived with their family in Omaha, NE. In 1999, John developed an interest in making wine and it quickly became his at-home hobby. Around 2005, John grew tired of working in the corporate world and decided that his hobby could become his business. Rose was delighted – her kitchen would finally be clear of wine splatters on her cupboards! With most of their six kids grown and out of the house, they picked up and moved to Carroll, IA, near Rose’s home town. For the vineyard, they found the perfect land next to St. Mary’s Church in Willey – only a mile from where Rose grew up. A machine shed served as the first temporary winery. It wasn’t much to look at, but some great wines, such as Swan Lake White, came out of that humble beginning.

Tucker Hill Vineyards officially opened to the public on May 29, 2009. However, the start of this venture goes back a little farther. Barry’s interest in making wine started in the late 1990s. His family gave him a home wine making kit and he processed his first batch of wine in 1998, a Chardonnay. Our vineyard journey didn’t start with land purchased in 1863 that was handed down through the generations – quite the contrary…we had round trip tickets to the South of France and Italy and a rental car, it was May 2004 and we called it our “Honeymoon”. After a few days unwinding on the beaches in Nice and Juan Le Pins we headed out north towards Aix en Provence on a road trip. We toured the countryside (mostly we were lost), enjoying the quaint towns, architecture and rolling vineyards.

The land that the Corkrum, Derby, and Elvin families farm today is rich with history dating back to the mid 1800’s, when current vineyard owner Shari Corkrum Derby’s grandfather Uriah Corkrum began farming in the area. Uriah experienced success farming in the 1880’s but unfortunately lost everything in the first great depression of 1893. He persevered though and acquired the land now known as Spring Valley in 1910. In 1993, Shari and Dean Derby planted the first grapes at Spring Valley. The first vintage of Estate grown and bottled Spring Valley Vineyard wines were produced with the 1999 vintage. The Derbys’ son Devin Corkrum Derby served as winemaker until his untimely death in 2004. Devin’s assistant and friend Serge Laville took over as winemaker and continues the legacy of Spring Valley Vineyard.

Instead of joining the rest of the family at church on Sundays, Larry Grassini’s grandfather Articondo Grassini was more religious about keeping a garden. Articondo came to the United States from Pisa, Italy in the early 1900s with his wife Afiora Tinucci. He would stay home on Sundays to make that evening’s ravioli from the green bounty of his garden, while enjoying a glass of wine (or two)…. He also kept several chickens as part of his garden. As a nod to Grandpa Articondo, industrious fowl roam our vineyard while sustainably fertilizing the vines. John Balistreri’s wines are made naturally in a very approachable, easy drinking style. Only grapes that are hand-harvested are used to make the wine. All of which are selected from high quality single vineyard sites across Colorado and occasionally California.The grapes are then carefully crushed in the winery and allowed to ferment using indigenous yeasts. This preserves the character and quality of the fruit. Through careful wine-making and working closely with growers, Balistreri Vineyards is able to forgo the use of sulfites or other chemicals. The wines are not filtered or fined, and instead are bottled one barrel at a time, without racking. Due to the wines not being filtered, our wines may form a harmless deposit over time. If this occurs, we suggest the wine be poured gently or decanted to avoid disturbing the sediment.

Established in 2005, Carolina Heritage Vineyard and Winery is a 35-acre farm three miles east of Elkin, North Carolina, along HWY 268 in the middle of the Yadkin Valley Viticultural area. Founders Clyde and Pat Colwell share a passion for farming and the environment, having both grown up in rural areas of the country. Clyde spent his childhood in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State surrounded by beautiful vineyards, and his wife Pat was raised in Northern Wisconsin in dairy and potato country. After successful careers in other fields, both decided to pursue a long-held dream of owning their own farm. From childhood Clyde had had a desire to establish a vineyard and winery and Pat had long been focused on the importance a clean environment to life. Combining their knowledge and passions, the husband-and-wife team completed degrees in Viticulture and Enology from Surry Community College, established the first USDA-Certified Organic vineyard and winery in North Carolina on Highway 268 in Surry County and began to make their own wines. After 11 years, their grapes and blueberries are flourishing and so are their dreams of establishing an environmentally-friendly wine establishment!

A combination of cultured yeast and wild yeast fermentations are employed, and the wines are aged in all French oak. William Ferdinand Detert, known to friends and family as W.F., came to the US in 1866. He opened and operated the Argonaut Mine in Jackson, CA which he sold in 1912. W.F. transferred his income from gold mining into cattle ranches and other mining operations. From 1912 on, he owned the 22,000 acre Guenoc Ranch in Lake County as well as the Detert Ranch in Amador and El Dorado Counties and the Mayflower Gold Mine in Placer. Our great-grandfather, Richard Detert, came to the US from Germany in 1909 at the age of 23 and eventually made his way to CA in 1926 to manage his uncle’s (W.F. Detert) various properties. Richard and our great-grandmother, Hedwig Detert (known to us as Mutti), lived in San Francisco and travelled to the Guenoc Ranch regularly. It was through these multi-day trips, prior to the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge, that our great-grandmother fell in love with the Napa Valley.

As one of eight children, Percy Walter George Ross, was the most spirited, and known to gamble impulsively on the horses. In 1906 Percy fled Canada to the United States on his horse, “Grey Ghost“. Although it was more likely Percy was running from trouble, when he never returned home to Canada, the Ross family feared that Percy had passed away in the Great Dayton Flood.

Twenty nine years ago I began to plant a small vineyard with the intention of making wine for Shabbos and Yom Tov. I had been making my own kiddush wine for years and the site of the vineyard, where I live, was promising. The Santa Cruz Mountain wine growing region of California, though small, has long been known for its quality wines. The vineyard is situated on a south-facing slope surrounded by oak and redwood forest looking down the valley to the Pacific Ocean. It had been planted with wine grapes in the 1880s, but the original vines were pulled up during prohibition.
