Immigrating from the Abruzzo region of Italy in 1962, Penns Woods Founder & Winemaker Gino Razzi served 4 years in the United States Marine Corps then attended college in California for Engineering. After settling in the Delaware County are, he founded wine import company, WinesU. Razzi spent over 30 years in the wine trade before turning his sights to winemaking. In 1997, his first commercially released wine, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo “Symposium” was awarded 95 points from Wine Spectator.
In 2001, Gino founded Penns Woods Winery and began crafting premium Pennsylvania wine utilizing locally sourced grapes. After years of searching for an ideal vineyard site, Gino purchased Smithbridge Winery to take advantage of the established vineyard, planted in the late 70s & early 80s. In 2004, after three years of rehabilitating the vineyard site, he was finally able to begin making wine with estate grown grapes in 2004.
Our Tasting Room first opened in 2006 & by 2010, his daughter Carley came back from college to help run the business. By 2012, a second site in Coatesville was planted. Penns Woods Winery has grown from 7 acres of vines to over 35! We are 100% PA grown and proud. In order to contribute to the legacy & hard work of the Pennsylvania wine industry, a dollar of each bottle of Penns Woods is donated to viticulture & enology research in the state.
Penns Woods Winery produces internationally recognized & award winning wines. Even after 20 years we still feel like our story here is just beginning. Come by the Tasting Room to experience the unique terroir of Pennsylvania and be a part of history in the making.
