The Hinnant Family Vineyards & Winery Story It all started in 1971 when the Hinnant siblings Jacqueline, Freddie, Douglas and Willard had a dream to start a vineyard in Johnston County. Mount Eden Vineyards is a small historic wine estate perched at 2000 feet overlooking Silicon Valley in the Santa Cruz Mountain Appellation, about 50 miles south of San Francisco. However, once there the friendly staff allows a generous 6 samples of wine(free). Since I’m a person who prefers a semi-sweet wine I brought home a bottle of a semi sweet for $15 plus tax. That’s a reasonable price considering how many wineries I have been to over the years. I was told that they have special events such as painting classes and live music during the warmer months. Sounds like a plan for the future.

If anyone had told us that we would be making wine and owning our own winery, we would have told them they were crazy. One of the special things about wineries and the wines behind them is “the story”. So, this is our story. Gary and Dawn Brumfield have known each other since childhood. They both grew up in Tillamook, Oregon and they were indeed high school sweethearts. Gary enlisted in the U.S. Army after graduation and he and Dawn were married in the early 1980’s. Gary served for 21 years in the Army and they travelled the world with their small family. In 1999, Gary retired from the military as a Chief Warrant Officer 3. They had moved around the country and the world 19 times. It was after all of this, that Dawn said to Gary, “I have moved 19 times for you, it’s time for you to make a move for me.” You see, Gary and Dawn had become young grandparents and this was the new priority.

Follow these simple rules for wine tasting. Hold the glass by the stem, not the bowl so you don’t heat up the wine. Start with dry wines and/or white wines first and move on to the reds and sweeter wines. Stick your nose inside the wine glass and take several small sniffs (not one big one). Then take a 10 second break, swirl the wine in the glass and repeat the last step. Check out the wine color in the light, and make sure the wine is clear and not cloudy. Then take a small sip and swirl it around in your mouth, and swallow (don’t gulp). If you are tasting a large number of wines, pour the rest out rather than swallowing it. Make sure you write down the name of the wine and any comments or evaluations after each sample, otherwise you will forget them!

Our wines have been made using minimal intervention in order to highlight the flavors that come naturally from the terroir of the Eastern Washington vineyards. None of the wines have been fined and they are filtered through a very coarse pad to remove sediment generated from the aging process. We have refined the malolactic fermentation process to minimize the histamines in the wine. All of our wines are aged in 225L and 500L French Oak barrels with an average age of 4 years to keep the oak influence subtle.

De Tierra Vineyards began in 1998 as an organic grape-growing operation in the Salinas Valley by Tom Russell, an agriculture professional from Phoenix, Arizona. Russell had transitioned the majority of his conventional row crop vegetable operation to organic in the early 1990’s, and had great success in the California market. Russell was passionate about wine and farming, and wanted to explore the benefits of organic farming with wine grapes. Russell teamed up with friend and winemaker of Vignalta Italy, Lucio Gomiero, and planned to develop an organic vineyard in the Corral de Tierra Valley. In 1852, Sarah and Richard Whitten left Cincinnati, Ohio and came to Oregon with the wagon train. Richard had a Donation Land Claim and they settled in Rosemont. In 1856, Richard drowned above the Oregon City Falls. Later that year, Sarah met and wed Franklin Ford. Mr. Ford had also arrived in Oregon with the wagon train. He was the widowed father of two daughters and Sarah was now a widow with three sons. (almost the “Brady Bunch”) Franklin moved onto the Land Claim and started farming. Together, he and Sarah had five more sons and one daughter. Franklin was also a County Commissioner, a veteran of the Rogue River Indian Wars, and a delegate to the Oregon Republican Convention. S. R. Tonella Cellars is the culmination of over 100 continuous years in the wine business in Rutherford, Napa Valley. It all started with an earthquake. In 1906 after the great San Francisco earthquake, a huge demand for workers to rebuild the city brought Joseph Ponti, Steve’s great uncle, from Italy to San Francisco. Shortly thereafter, Ponti became the superintendent and initial winemaker at the iconic Beaulieu Vineyards in Rutherford, where he stayed for 43 years. He made the first internationally recognized Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley. In 1939 it won a gold medal at the Golden Gate International Exposition for his 1936 Beaulieu Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. Since that time, Cabernet Sauvignon has become synonymous with Rutherford and Napa Valley. Ponti’s nephew, Steve’s grandfather, Louis Tonella, joined his uncle at Beaulieu when he was just 17 and worked there for several years. Louis inherited from Ponti vineyards located in the Rutherford viticulture region and the tradition continues to today. Grape growing and wine production have been a part of Steve’s life and family history.

The original vineyard of 82 acres was planted in the summer of 1996. During the first winter, there occurred what is considered a “100-year Flood.” This unforeseen event had a devastating effect on the property because five acres of the fertile land was washed away with the flood waters. This event showed the true nature of the land, and that flood-related damage was a real problem. Once realizing the threat of Mother Nature, the entire property was developed to prevent irreparable damage caused by future floods. The Flying Dutchman is a small family-owned winery that enjoys one of the most spectacular locations on the Oregon Coast. We have been making wine in front of the ocean since 1997 and many feel that it’s the salt air that makes our wines so unique. Winemaker and owner Richard Cutler started the winery in the restaurant of the Inn at Otter Crest. It was billed as Oregon’s first ‘micro-winery’ and was popular from the start. With a little beginners luck, Cutler’s first vintage of Pinot Noir won the winery’s first medal at the prestigious 1999 Oregon State Fair. Since then Flying Dutchman wines have earned many medals and are highly regarded in the northwest.

Our founder and winemaker, George Cooper, established this vineyard, our first, in 1972 under the tutelage of legendary winemaker Martin Ray and with the help of nephew Jan Garrod and other family members. Martin Ray provided the first cuttings of Cabernet Sauvignon from the original Paul Masson vineyards, which he owned in the 1930 and 1940’s, that trace their origin to vines from Margaux that Masson planted in the early 1900s.

The Rolling View Vineyard, located within the Willcox AVA, sits at an average elevation of 4,200 feet. Purchased in 2011, and with 27 acres currently under production, the 80-acre estate in an area termed the Willcox Bench. The bench rises in elevation away from the valley floor and provides air drainage from freezing temperature. The soil compositions are well-draining gravelly and sandy loams. The predominant structures are Comoro, Tubac and Sonoita sandy loam. The name Rolling View Vineyard pays tribute to the Pierce family’s Rolling View Farm in Nebraska. Pictured below is Frank Elliot Pierce at the farm. Now, four generations on, the Pierces have continued the agricultural tradition in Southern Arizona.
