In fact, the land has been accepted in the National Register of Historical Places. In the spring of 1998, we planted 20 acres of mostly vinifera grapes with the addition of Syrah, Petite Sirah, and Riesling vines. In the Spring of 2007, we constructed a winemaking facility and have established an additional new winery – Leaser Lake Vineyards. Our plan is to continue to plant vines over the next few years, which will bring the total acreage in vine to 100 acres.

In the early 1900’s, grandparents Pietro and Teresina Bassetti purchased 633 acres just outside the town of Cambria on the central coast of California. These Swiss immigrants made their way as dairy farmers. Of their six children, the second eldest son Tilden, chose to stay and carry on dairy farming with his wife Rena, adding beef cattle along with hay and grain production. Ellis Bassetti, Tilden’s son, married Susie after graduating from Cal Poly and set up at the old family farm house, continuing in his father’s footsteps as well as becoming a general contractor. In 1989, we acquired 60 acres of the original family holding and began to move in a very different direction. Today the acreage sustains our vineyard, olive orchard, lavender, herbs, figs, pomegranates, Meyer lemon, blood orange, pear and apple trees.

Our logo bottle contains lines that spell out “ONE” in Ogham. Ogham is an origin of ancient writing discovered in Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England, and the Isle of Man from between the 4th and 6th centuries AD. The Ogham alphabet is thought to be named after the Irish god Ogma, and the tallies possibly evolved as a system for ancient accounting! This all speaks to me, as I am Irish & Scottish, and my great grandpa lived on Copeland Isle off Ireland before migrating to the US by sneaking through Canada. The only surviving traces of Ogham are inscriptions on stone, and I had the privilege of seeing them in person about 20 years ago. The experience definitely sparked some Irish magic in our logo! We even go so far as to have our Wine Club members’ names written in Ogham, and displayed on one of our walls!

There were once over 70 sheep on the property as well as an assortment of other pets and farm animals— dogs, cats, chickens, geese, and even a steer named Junior.

I mentioned last week how I enjoy Robby’s Blend with plum dishes. Well, now I am craving a glass! Every wine has a story and this wine has many. My favorite was the first one, when we hadn’t even blended it yet. I had made 25 blends and numbered them blindly and had Robert with two of his friends one evening try them and rate them. It was one of the top three. (2011 Renaissance by Reyes Les Dex Rois and 2011 Julia were the other two) Then a few weeks later, I took the top three blends and 22 different and had them taste again. The same three winners won again. How could we not put that in a bottle? Nine years later, it is one of our favorite wines. I always hear that everyone loves Robby’s Blend.

This is a small vineyard located in western Los Alamos, close to the Vandenberg Air Force Base. The town of Los Alamos is wedged between the Santa Maria Valley and the Santa Ynez Valleys in Santa Barbara County. Frigid winds coming off of the cold Pacific Ocean waters flow though this vineyard daily; helping to keep it cool and dry. The owners allow me to do as much as the farming as I see fit, but I am lucky enough to have Jeff Frey doing most of the work. The soil is a very sandy loam. This is a younger site with a huge future due to it’s climate. The wine I designate “Kick-on Ranch” gets the full “Austrian treatment’, meaning some skin contact and aged in neutral wood. The outcome is a wine with floral, and mineral aromas. On the pallet it exhibits citrus fruits, a wonderful salinity, and great length. This is the most age worthy of all of my wines and I highly recommend decanting it.

Since our arrival at Eeden, sporadic discoveries have provided pieces of the puzzle of Eeden’s history. These include a beam with the words La Granja, the farm, carved into it; original architectural floor plans of the three-bedroom Western ranch style main residence of Mr. and Mrs. Charles T. Beringer, drawn by architect J. Clarence Felciano of Santa Rosa; wooden grape lugs with the names Beringer Bros. and Olga Beringer stamped on the sides; and the words Los Hermanos Vineyards painted on one of the buildings. Jacob and his brother Frederick established Beringer Brothers in 1876. Jacob planted the first vineyard and built the first Beringer winery in St. Helena. In 1914, Charles and other family members incorporated Beringer Brothers Los Hermanos Vineyards. Based on a tinted picture we discovered, Charles and his wife Olga also established the first vineyards at Eeden in the 1930s and built their famous ranch style house at Eeden in 1942. David Wickham, owner of theTularosa Vineyards Winery, is a native of Watkins Glen, New York. His tour of duty took him overseas and during that time he was stationed in Germany and Turkey . In 1968 he was assigned to Holloman Air Force Base and it was here that he met his wife, Teresita Chavez a native of Tularosa. When David retired from the service they moved back to the quaint village of Tularosa. The years 1978 through 1987 saw David attending college and working as an instrumentation technician at HAFB. After doing research into the history of growing vinifera wine grapes in New Mexico it became evident to David that the Tularosa Basin was an ideal climate for growing high quality wine grapes as the Mission variety was used here by locals since the founding of Tularosa. David Wickham began attending grapegrowing and winemaking seminars held by the New Mexico Vine and Wine Society and by 1985 David purchased 10 acres of land and began planting the first vineyards.

The Winery at Marjim manor is located in Western New York’s fruit belt. This W.O.W. (Woman Owned Winery) is owned by Margo Sue Bittner. The Marjim name comes from a blending of her first name with that of her husband, Jim. It is a name they created 35 years ago when they began dairy farming. The Winery is a truly a family affair: Margo Sue Bittner is president; Margo’s daughter, Janet Walker assists with sales and marketing. The fruit comes from Bittner-Singer Orchards, where Margo’s husband Jim, is president. Their sons work full time at Bittner-Singer Orchards also. The 9500 square foot mansion has a unique appearance and history. Formerly called Appleton Hall, it is built of bricks imported from Italy by its original owner, Shubal Merritt, who bought the property from the Holland Land Company. It features a wrap-around enclosed porch, carefully restored to its former glory.

The Sunshine Mill has a long, colorful history. The Sunshine Mill has milled wheat on this property for more than 130 years, and was the first building in The Dalles to have electricity, powered by a Thomas Edison Motor which can still be seen in The Mill. It is also the only designated skyscraper in The Columbia River Gorge. The Sunshine Biscuit Company once owned this property and the wheat milled here was used to make everyone’s favorite cracker, the Cheez-It! The Sunshine Mill now houses Quenett and Copa Di Vino wineries owned and operated by James and Molli Martin, both from The Dalles. Quenett Winery released its first vintage in 2002 and burst onto the wine scene with its outstanding vintages of Sangiovese and Zinfandel. The word Quenett comes from the journals of Lewis and Clark, who camped along luscious and fruitful banks of the Columbia River and learned from the local Indians that the word Quenett meant “Steelhead.”

The West Elks American Viticultural Area (AVA) spreads through Delta county on the Western Slope of Colorado. It boasts of some of the highest vineyards in North America and the some of the best Colorado wine. This high mesa area in the Colorado Rockies seems an unlikely place to grow grapes and make wine. But here you will find some of the best wine produced in the state. West Elks AVA is noted for its production of white wines.
