Harold and Kris Casto began their love affair with the Sierra Foothills when they bought a 160 acre ranch in Hunter’s Valley, a community east of Mariposa, California.
During the week they ran a successful roofing company and on weekends they worked on the ranch. While it seemed overwhelming at times, they reveled in the challenges and opportunities rural life afforded.

Over 25 years ago, Paul Renzaglia never would have thought that a family venture would have such a profound effect on Southern Illinois and its community. President and wine maker Paul Renzaglia even felt like he was stepping into unknown territory. “At first I was scared that this venture would not go anywhere. But now I’ve seen the tremendous growth and popularity of the industry in Illinois and I am just amazed as to what has come of it,” he said. Although an appreciation of wine is deeply rooted in the Renzaglia family, improving the lives of others was Paul’s first passion. He completed his Bachelor’s degree at SIU in Administration of Justice and moved on to work with troubled youth in the St. Louis and Chicago areas.

Being the first in his family to go to college, James Frey met Andrea Lassa at university. With limited resources and much debt, they began their life together with the hope to one day own a piece of land on which they could farm, raise a family, and make a living. In 2003, the opportunity presented itself, and James and Andrea purchased a steep and rocky site five miles outside the town of McMinnville. They moved their young children to Oregon, planted a vineyard, and founded Trisaetum (tris-say-tum) in one of the few places where climate, soil, and entrepreneurial spirit combine to produce some very special wines. Two years later, they found another piece of land twenty minutes away on Ribbon Ridge, cleared the site, planted a second vineyard, and eventually built the winery where the wines are made today. The idea for Blue Sky Farm was first kicked around in 1998, when Russ Betz, owner and proprietor of the present Blue Sky Farm, had an idea for his retirement. He wanted to start a U-Pick Blueberry farm where people could come and pick fresh, natural blueberries. He started making plans and in 2001 planted the first blueberries and Blue Sky Farm was born. Roughly 5 acres of the farm is covered by the two main types of blueberries Russ grows, Patriot and Blue Crop. After much hard work and maintenance, the first crop of blueberries were picked Summer of 2005. A local, favorite source for healthy, good fruit was born and popularity has increased each year. After a few years, Russ noticed that he had a surplus of blueberries and so decided to put them to good use. Our story began in 1978 when Owner, Dan Smith planted a vineyard on a rolling hillside in Crow, Oregon. Northfield Vineyards is a family owned winery tucked back in the hills of White County, Tennessee. The etymology of our name: Rock Wall Wine Company is located on the former Alameda Naval Air Base which was decommissioned in 1997 and turned over to the community and is slowly being converted to civilian use. The name Rock Wall refers to the defensive perimeter wall built during WWII in the San Francisco Bay to protect the base from Japanese air to sea torpedoes. All military installations on the west coast created similar protective barriers. This wall is visible from our facility as well as elsewhere on the base. The wall has also been a popular fishing location for local anglers looking for striped bass.

In Napa, cabernet is king. So it didn’t come as a surprise to hear the Uproot faithful clamoring for more. Our wines begin their lives in the best areas of Washington. In 2007 EFESTĒ planted three vineyards owned by Kevin and Angela Taylor in Washington’s Yakima Valley AVA in order to produce estate bottlings. The Columbia Valley is Washington’s all-encompassing region with some 11 million acres of land in all. Caliche deposits and basalt along with gingko petrified forest make up the ancient soils. The new Ancient Lakes AVA is part of this region. This higher, cooler site at over 1,300 feet in elevation allows grapes to hold onto their acidity and produces fruit true to its character. Bacchus Vineyard: Cabernet Sauvignon; Evergreen Vineyard: Chardonnay, Riesling, and Sauvignon Blanc; Sagemoor Vineyard: Cabernet Sauvignon. By land, the winery is located less than a mile from the Seaway Trail, by turning from NYS 12E in Chaumont, NY, onto County Route 125 (Pt. Salubrious). On 30 acres of carefully tended vines, we grow 14 varieties of grapes. If you visit early in June, you will catch the luscious fragrance of the grape blossoms, with the tender young grape leaves unfurling. Through the spring and summer, the vineyard staff is busy tying the expanding vines onto their arbors and removing unneeded clusters. With Mother Nature’s cooperation, the first plump juicy grapes are ready for harvest by early September. The juice that ultimately becomes Nissley estate-bottled wine is pressed from grapes brought into the winery fresh from the vineyards. Amaranth Ridge Vineyard is located in the Umpqua AVA, just 5.5 miles east of historic Oakland, Oregon at an elevation of 623 feet. Initial plantings were in the spring of 2004 and specialized in non-traditional red varietals from Northern Italy and Australia produced naturally. These include Lagrein, Sangiovese, Barbara, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Syrah. Ground preparation began in 2003 with mechanical methods of ground clearing versus chemical spraying. The organic material was then chopped and tilled under to begin the process of increasing the natural release of micronutrients through soil interaction. Amaranth Ridge utilizes natural resource management and alternative energy production since 2003. (Contrary to local newspaper articles). We have deployed implementations of solar and wind generation along with rainwater catchments for use at the vineyard, winery and support sites. We also utilize and customize electric carts for use in the vineyard versus the diesel or gas engine utility vehicles found commonly throughout this industry and have so since inception.

One of the special things about wineries and the wines behind them is “the story”. So, this is our story. Gary and Dawn Brumfield have known each other since childhood. They both grew up in Tillamook, Oregon and they were indeed high school sweethearts. Gary enlisted in the U.S. Army after graduation and he and Dawn were married in the early 1980’s. Gary served for 21 years in the Army and they travelled the world with their small family. In 1999, Gary retired from the military as a Chief Warrant Officer 3. They had moved around the country and the world 19 times. It was after all of this, that Dawn said to Gary, “I have moved 19 times for you, it’s time for you to make a move for me.” You see, Gary and Dawn had become young grandparents and this was the new priority.

Processing GrapesThe Southern Oregon Wine Institute (SOWI) was established in 2008 at UCC as the first viticulture and oenology program in Oregon outside the Willamette Valley. SOWI offers degree, certificate and continuing education programs that merge conventional classroom training with experiential learning, providing students with the knowledge and skills necessary to either support existing growers and winemakers or establish ventures of their own. Housed in the beautiful Danny Lang Teaching, Learning & Event Center, built-in 2010.

I have high hopes that this will inspire my grandchildren as they get older to join us in our venture. Everything begins in the vineyard. But, we are able to determine the method of fermentation and aging to make the style of wine we envision. Our goal is to create a wine of elegance with fruit intensity, fine tannins, silky texture using our experience in the vineyard, knowledge of fermentation, blending and barrel aging.

Founded in 1848, the Herzog family winery was renowned as the exclusive wine supplier to the emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Franz Josef, earning one of the early Herzogs the royal title of Baron. Besides attaining royal status, Baron Herzog’s wines had also become sought after by a wave of European wine lovers. The wines became well known for their quality and high standards of production. Smooth textured, full flavored and simply delicious, these wines built a reputation that would prove valuable in later years. The winemaking family left Europe in 1948 and continued their tradition of winemaking excellence in the United States. The Herzog family opened Kedem Winery in the scenic Hudson Valley and worked very hard to develop a full line of opulent wines bearing the Kedem label. In later years, Kedem expanded the selection with premium label Kedem Estates wines including a Cabernet Sauvignon. Crafted from rich New York State grapes, Kedem Estates wines are truly enchanting.

Goldeneye Winery was founded in 1996, years before the Pinot Noir boom that has reshaped the landscape of California winemaking. But the genesis for Goldeneye goes back even further. In 1990, after fifteen years of making world-class Bordeaux-varietal wines, Dan and Margaret Duckhorn embraced their growing love of Pinot Noir. Their vision for Goldeneye was simple, though not easy. They wanted to found a winery that could make a terroir-inspired expression of California Pinot Noir of equal stature to the acclaimed Merlots they had pioneered at Duckhorn Vineyards in Napa Valley. For Pinot Noir, the Duckhorns believed that true greatness would be found on the cool-climate edges of modern California viticulture and found what they were looking for in the Anderson Valley.

Our Story Chestnut Run Farm is a small farm winery in beautiful Salem County, New Jersey. Bob and Lise Clark have owned and operated this farm since 1986. For many years we were growers and packers of specialty produce such as Asian pears, gourmet apple varieties, yellow tomatoes, purple, lilac, orange, yellow and red bell peppers, ornamental Indian corn. Our produce was featured in fine markets and restaurants all along the eastern seaboard. Globalization of the produce industry made it difficult for a small family farm like ours to compete. Since Asian pears were our real specialty, we experimented with different value-added products and found we could make good wine from these fruit. Since 2006, all of the fruit grown here has been used to make Asian pear, Fuji apple and Japanese plum wines. Chestnut Run Farm uses only fruit grown right here on our own farm to produce these delicious wines. Our Farm Chestnut Run Farm is a 22 acre, permanently preserved farm located at the headwaters of Chestnut Run, from which the farm takes its name. The Wines of Dotson-Cervantes are a testament to the glory that can be accomplished through the love and determination of a husband and wife. Alphonse Dotson, a former NFL defensive tackle for the Oakland Raiders, and his wife Martha Cervantes went from the sparkle of a dream to growing some of the most-prized grapes in Texas, and creating the most exquisite wines. When Alphonse was just a boy, he recalls a visit to his grandfather’s house in Houston like it was yesterday. Walking the grounds, he stumbled upon the most beautiful grape vines, and was amazed that his grandfather was able to accomplish this feat in Texas of all places. His grandfather’s chuckle at his perplexity planted the seed that would sprout in his mind years later.

The name “Bells Up” ties together our location on Bell Road with Dave’s 20-plus years as a French horn player who performed throughout high school and college. The musical term refers to a dramatic moment in classical music where the composer’s score instructs the French horn players to lift the bells of their instruments up to project their sound with maximum intensity. The winery, says Dave, is his #bellsupmoment The 9-acre Bells Up estate vineyard—comprised entirely of Jory soil and located in the Chehalem Mountains AVA just north of Newberg—is being planted in phases and primarily in Pinot Noir. The first 3 acres of Heritage clone Pommard and Dijon clone 667 were planted in April 2014, with posts and wires added in March 2015. A third block (0.5-acre) of the Willamette Valley’s first planting of Seyval Blanc was established in March 2015. Three additional blocks (2.5 acres) of Heritage clone Wadenswil, and Dijon clones 113 and 943 were planted in March 2016. In fall 2020 the Seyval Blanc block was expanded and an obscure Northern Italian varietal added in a new block. The remaining acreage, closest to Bell Road, is anticipated to be planted at a future date. .
