At Quady North, we are committed to the production of small lots using minimal handling at all stages of the process in order to show the distinct terroir of Southern Oregon. After moving with his family from California in late 2003, Herb quickly became convinced that Southern Oregon was a region on the verge of exploding onto the wine scene. The climate, with warm days punctuated by afternoon winds and cool nights, reminded him of Southern France, and he was convinced that Rhone varieties would thrive. In 2005, the Quady family purchased 100 acres, which contained the remains of an old motocross track and several dozen aging vehicles, and set upon the long task of converting it into an Estate vineyard. The next year, Herb and Meloney made the first vintage from purchased fruit while Herb worked as a winemaker at Troon Vineyard. Sourcing from distinct sites at disparate corners of the region, the first vintage was of excellent quality, and showed the terroir of each site.

Dick Boushey was the very first grower with whom we partnered and remains a vital key to Avennia’s voice. We source 3 different varieties from him, which go into making 3 of our flagship wines. He is best known for his Yakima Valley Syrah and Avennia is the only winery that uses both of his oldest blocks of this coveted fruit. The older, called Grand Cote (meaning “great hillside”), produces wine that is piercingly pure and focused, with meaty and mineral aromas backing up its deep blackberry and damson plum fruit flavors. Wines from the second block, Factory Road, show richer body and feature savory cured meat notes, along with orange peel, and a distinct iron note. The combination of these two Syrah blocks composes one of our signature wines that we’ve been making since our very first vintage, the Arnaut. When you ask David about olive oil, he immediately recounts growing up in Rutherford. Just like it was 60 years ago, when olive trees lined the avenues and crossroads throughout the valley. At Madrona Ranch, the ancient Arbequina and Farga trees drape in front of oldest vines at the base of the property. It is from these trees that we made our first olive oil. Now, olives reside on each vineyard site producing oils as distinctive as their grape counterparts. The oils are all cold pressed, extra virgin. The same oil that David remembers from his childhood. David’s mom is tough. You would have to be to raise seven kids in a two-bedroom farmhouse. Kathleen ran the house, the farm and she ruled the kitchen. Dinner time was as much about work as it was about feeding empty stomachs. All the children had a task. Pontchartrain Vineyards was founded in 1991, by winemaker, John Seago, with the goal of creating quality wines that appeal to the culture, cuisine and sensibilities of Southeast Louisiana. Pontchartrain Vineyards is the only winery in the state producing table wines exclusively from traditional bunch/wine grapes. Planting began at Pontchartrain Vineyards’ 34.5 acre vineyard site north of Covington, in the fall of 1991. The location is approximately 140 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico and 20 miles north of Lake Pontchartrain in the first hills arising off the flat coastal plain of south Louisiana. The vineyard is approximately 150’ above sea level and has well drained, sandy loam soils from the Savannah and Ruston series of the soils of the upland terraces. The Ross family migrated from Scotland to Canada in the late 1800’s and settled on a large horse farm near Alberta. As one of eight children, Percy Walter George Ross, was the most spirited, and known to gamble impulsively on the horses. In 1906 Percy fled Canada to the United States on his horse, “Grey Ghost“. Although it was more likely Percy was running from trouble, when he never returned home to Canada, the Ross family feared that Percy had passed away in the Great Dayton Flood.

Our vineyard could not exist without the work of a man named Thomas Volney Munson (or T.V. for short). T.V. Munson was an American viticulturist working around the turn of the 20th century. He is credited with saving the European wine industry from utter destruction by Phylloxera, an epidemic during the late 1800’s. Phylloxera is an aphid that feeds on grapevine roots. Native to North America, this pest was introduced to Europe in the 1850’s by English botanists. It’s estimated that as much as 90% of European vineyards were destroyed by the aphid.

For Christmas 2005, Marcel gave Julie a wine making kit. Little did they know that this new hobby would quickly get out of control and would lead to their latest business venture, a winery, bistro, B&B combination, established in 2009 at the historic Clifton House Inn in Conifer. Quickly, they were able to establish this unique Denver Foothills getaway. Their guests could explore the wonderful world of food, wine and lodging in a quaint family atmosphere. It was the Summer of 2011 where lightning hit the 140-year old barn on the property and was destroyed by fire, resulting in the loss of their special events venue. This unfortunate circumstance lead to moving their business to a new, larger winemaking facility in Bailey, which they opened in 2012.

Alto Pomar Vineyard (DENO’s estate vines) was initially planted in 1993, as the dream of Dennis Sharpe, a native Southern Californian. As an agriculture student in both High School and College, Dennis made frequent trips to Cal Poly University in San Luis Obispo for agricultural events. There were few wineries at that time on the Central Coast but grape growing had been part of the local farming scene for decades. Dennis noticed the limestone and fossilized sea shells in many areas of the county. After developing a taste for fine wine in the early 1970’s the thoughts of those white rock soils brought an appreciation for what these soils could achieve in growing premium grapes.

The origins of Envy Wines began in the mid 1980’s when the historic Carter House Victorian was built. When this small bed and breakfast became too popular for the crowd from the cities up and down the west coast the Hotel Carter was added and a restaurant (the highly regarded Restaurant 301) was needed for the guests. For the guests at the restaurant Mark Carter began compiling what has become (since 1998) a Wine Spectator Grand Award winning wine list. He began sourcing the best wines the world had to offer from first growth Bordeaux to the top Napa Cabernet and even the high quality, little-known gems that helped the wine list stand out. Because of the great recognition of the restaurant and its wine list Mark was able to host winemaker dinners with the likes of Dan Duckhorn and Nils Venge.

The Pleasant Valley Wine Company, located near the village of Hammondsport, New York, is the oldest winery in the Finger Lakes region. On March 15, 1860, Charles Davenport Champlin and 12 local businessmen consolidated their holdings under “Articles of Association for the Manufacture of Native Wine” and, with $10,000 capitalization, built the first winery in this region. Pleasant Valley Wine Company was designated as Bonded Winery No. 1 in its State and Federal districts. The original winery was constructed on land whose price had soared from $10 to $100 an acre in one decade! It was built on a slope owned by Mr. Champlin overlooking Pleasant Valley, two miles south of Hammondsport. All winemaking operations were carried out by Jules and Joseph Masson, noted French-born winemakers of the time, in still-used wooden and stone structures, with adjacent cellars carved deep into the hillside. Eight of these Great Western Winery buildings were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

After reading an article on grape production in the Iowa State “Vision” Alumni magazine, Darrell began planting grapes in 2008 on his Mother’s farm with the help of his brother and both their families. Our Story begins simply as a couple who has loved wine for decades. We have and continue to enjoy wine with our meals, on picnics, and even just savoring it with family and friends. That was the initial motivation to learn how to craft it. We were encouraged with some early wine making success, and it pushed us to become more involved with our hobby. We quickly learned that to make a premium wine requires outstanding grapes and it was challenging finding available local fruit of the highest quality that was responsibly grown. In 2011 we became serious about our passion. After completing a soil analysis we planted a small vineyard on our property in Middletown, Maryland; a beautiful rural area which is located in the south western part of Frederick County. The original 1/4-acre test vineyard was planted in April 2012 with types that we believed to be the best suited for our site. The vineyard has been expanded every year since and is currently 1.75 acres.

George Hendry and his family have grown grapes on the same family farm in Napa Valley since 1939. Through eighty years of harvests, our connection to the land has deepened, and our knowledge has grown. Hendry Ranch is composed of 203 acres situated in the low, rolling hills just northwest of Napa, at the foot of Mt. Veeder, and includes 114 acres under vine. This location in the valley experiences substantial marine influence, allowing us to grow more than a dozen different types of wine grapes. All Hendry wines are made only from estate grapes, and are crafted to highlight the unique terroir of this very special vineyard.

The history and establishment of Terra Nonno winery It all started in the early 1900’s when my grandfather, Adamo Natale Pipitone, left Sicily, Italy as a young boy in his teens. Finding his way to America he settled in a small town known as Rosenhayn, New Jersey. (Southern New Jersey) Farming was his love and passion. After a few years in Rosenhayn, Adamo met his love Mamie, they were married soon after. Grand pop, a natural entrepreneur began purchasing farmland to raise crops to support his family. A portion of the farmland purchased is now Terra Nonno vineyard & winery. Our grandmother had 14 children, 7 died, 7 lived. Two of the 7 that lived, 2 were boys, and 5 were girls. In the early 1960’s when my grandfather was nearing retirement and his two sons Natale & Salvatore took the farm operations over. They expanded the farm into a 300 acre ponderosa. The Trinity building was built in 1892 as the First National Bank, where it once housed the first newspaper and later became the historic headquarters of the Carlsbad Irrigation District. In 2007, three partners bought the building with the dream of restoring the decaying property.
