Lyn-Nita Vineyards is a small café style winery located south of Elkville, Illinois. Started by owner, Anita Eckhardt, in 2010, Lyn-Nita Vineyards offers a full line of handcrafted Grape wines from dry to sweet, red, white and rosé wines. The first vintage from Lyn-Nita Vineyards vines are expected in 2013 but there is enough quality grapes from local vineyards to produce fine wines until then. Fine wine began in the vineyard and Southern Illinois has the unique distinction of having a recognized American Viticultural Area (AVA) in the Shawnee Hills. Lyn-Nita Vineyards are located just north of this AVA but many of the grapes used in her wines came from this area.

Ray and Pam Derby moved to the Central Coast area in the early 1990’s with the intention of retiring. In 1998, they purchased their first vineyard property, now known as Derbyshire Vineyard and their thoughts of retirement were replaced by the inspiration of being a part of the wine world. In the years following, Ray next acquired the historic Laura’s Vineyard (in east Paso) and then the Westside property, now called the Derby Vineyard. Needless to say, their plans of retirement never came to fruition. After experiencing nearly a decade as a grape grower, the potential strengths of each property became apparent and in 2008, Ray and Pam launched Derby Wine Estates. They are extremely selective in terms of what goes into the bottle under the Derby label. The commitment to the land is appreciable, with only 20 hand-selected acres being used to provide fruit for their own brand. Grapes from the remainder (some 90%of their total acreage) are sold to some of the finest wine producers in California.

The Graham Family Vineyard is located in the heart of the Russian River Valley appellation, between the towns of Forestville, Sebastopol and Graton. Howard Graham found the site for his vineyard in 2001, hired vineyard manager Charlie Chenoweth, and began planting in the spring of 2002. Howard and Charlie chose Pinot Noir clones 667, 777, 828, Swan and Calera in order to cover a wide spectrum of Pinot flavors.

Saintsbury Winery was founded by Richard Ward and David Graves in 1981. Incidentally they both met during their graduate studies in Enology at UC Davis while taking a brewing class together and is where they made their first non commercial wine (a Santa Barbara grown barrel fermented Riesling). Fate sometimes works its magic – David had a biology degree from UC Santa Cruz and Richard had an engineering degree and both were pursuing careers in the wine industry.

Randolph O’Neill Vineyard is the husband and wife team of Angela (née Randolph) and Kelley O’Neill. It grew from their mutual love for great wine and a gorgeous land. They produce limited quantity wines using estate grown Riesling and Cabernet Franc grapes from a small vineyard a few hundred yards from Cayuga Lake in New York’s Finger Lakes region. Kelley, who once made his living as a musician, makes the wine, manages the vineyard, and works as a one-man sales staff. Angela, a former zoo commissary technician, gamely picks grapes when she is not busy with her current paying gig as a financial planner-advisor. For them, viticulture is a lifestyle choice, not a financial quest. Kelley and Angela intend for ROV to remain small, producing hundreds of cases rather than thousands. This means they can always guarantee a high level of attention to detail and devotion to quality.

Just as the North Star has been used through the ages as a directional guide, Northstar Winery was established in the early 1990s to guide the creation of world-class Merlot-based wines that demonstrate the potential of the variety in Washington State. The region has since been recognized as one of the world’s most exciting and acclaimed regions for Merlot. Washington lies at the same latitude as the Bordeaux region in France, yet has the additional benefit of a longer growing season and cooler nighttime temperatures. These characteristics aid in the even ripening of grapes and the locking in of acidity, resulting in full-bodied yet balanced Merlots. Northstar’s first vintage was in 1994 and the state-of-the-art winery was built in 2002. “We relish the opportunity of sharing the passion and pride we have for our wines as well as our heritage through your enjoyment of Cubanisimo Vineyards.“ Our venture into the wine industry started with the purchase of a 21-acre parcel evaluated for its vineyard potential in 1986. We planted 8 acres of Pinot Noir on our SE facing hillside as we further developed our estate property in the Willamette Valley. Initially, our focus was on refining our vineyard management, and we would sell our grapes to larger wineries in Oregon such as King Estate, and Erath. It was in our dealings with Erath that we had the opportunity of getting to know our winemaker, Rob Stuart. In 2003, we decided to forge ahead with the dream by keeping ½ the product from our vineyards to produce our own wines under the label of Cubanisimo Vineyards. Many souls searching took place in the name selection, and label design since we wanted our homage to our Cuban heritage to be a quality product in every way. Seven Springs’ eastern exposure ensures the vineyard awakens to the warmth of the morning sun. Blackhawk Winery was established in 2011 as a result of an epiphany of “why not open a winery?” It is really just a hobby that has gotten out of control. We realized we had a 5-acre field being leased out for soybeans that could produce a reasonable amount of grapes to support a small winery. We also had a large pole barn that we could partition off and renovate a 2500 sq ft area for wine production and a tasting bar. Plus, there is the wide array of critters running around to make it interesting and memorable for potential visitors! We had the opportunity to purchase the land on the north side of our property in 2016 which we did so we could expand our vineyard. This will give us a larger variety of estate-grown grapes plus some land for events.

The Crawford Beck Vineyard (CBV) is a venture of David and Jeanne Beck, located in the Eola-Amity Hills American Viticultural Area (AVA) of the Willamette Valley in Oregon. The Eola Amity Hills AVA is quite different from the other Willamette Valley AVAs, and the CBV is distinct in its own micro-terroir. Its soils are of volcanic origin, having been laid down by lava flows that occurred some 15 million years ago. These clay-loam soils overlay some ancient marine sediments that in many places are not far below the volcanic soils. Furthermore, the CBV lies on the gentle slopes of a swale that faces south-southwest, looking across the Willamette Valley toward the gap in the Coast Range through which cooling breezes flow into the Valley. These breezes blow steadily all summer, bathing the CBV slopes at night with relief from the day’s heat so essential for our grape varieties. The altitude of the CBV slopes ranges from 387 feet to 521 feet above sea level. Our vineyard lies on south and southwest slopes at elevations from 250-450 feet, which offers the maximum degree days for fruit ripening. Vines include Dijon (115, 777,113) and Pommard clones. Nearly 230 years ago Franciscan friars planted wine grapes in Monterey County. Although these early vineyards are no longer around, they foretold the story of the thriving grape growing industry of today. To help them navigate from mission to mission, these early missionaries would mark their trails along the California coast with mustard seeds. The mustard plants reveal the trail traveled by those dedicated missionaries. Today, one can still follow the mustard plants along the trail that the missionaries traveled. And along the way, we see vineyards planted beside the California mission trail.

The Umpqua Valley has 3000 planted acres, with pinot noir the most planted variety. Lying within the Umpqua Valley is the Elkton Oregon AVA (American viticultural area), which was officially designated in 2013 as a means to differentiate this area from the much warmer microclimates characteristic of most of southern Oregon. Elkton lies just 36 miles inland from the Pacific. There is a very long frost-free growing season, with cool temperate conditions lasting until late fall. The average July and August high temperatures are only 83F. This all results in grapes that can hang on the vine longer, developing truly complex flavours. The Brandborgs have built a functional winery with a beautiful spacious tasting room in charming Elkton. Both are self-taught in winemaking and grape growing and after 40 vintages remain committed to continued learning and growth. A stubborn focus on detail and an uncompromising, do it yourself, hands-on approach has resulted in harmonious wines made for the table, praised by customers and critics alike.

My earliest memories of my grandfather Guido Ragghianti were in the fields and vineyards surrounding his home in St. Helena on Charter Oak Avenue picking and crushing grapes. My first memory of wine was seeing crushed grape s in a large, wooden fermentation tank. I was mesmerized by the color, smell, and taste of the crushed grapes. Nesto Pontin’s father, Angelo, immigrated to the Valley planting terraced vineyards just as his family had done for centuries in Italy. Today Pontin del Roza is a thriving estate winery with over 100 acres of 10 varietals including: Riesling, Malbec, Syrah, Dolcetto, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère and Petit Verdot. Patrick Merry developed an interest in wine long before he ever crushed his first grapes. Growing a vineyard in Texas isn’t the easiest thing to do, but the Marek and Hanus family didn’t have an easy start, coming from Czechoslovakia to America in the late 1800s. The winemaking passion began in 1891, when Winemaker Dan Marek’s Great Great Grandfather, Vaclav Hanus, planted and propagated over 100 grape varietals by himself. His fame spread from the small town of LaGrange, Texas, and folks would come from far and wide to bring his grapes home. Grandpa Hanus never charged anyone for them.

Eminence Road FarmWinery makes small lots of dry table wine in a barn on the western edge of the Catskills using vinifera grapes from sustainably managed Finger Lakes vineyards.Wine is fermented by naturally occurring yeasts and bottled by hand, unfined and unfiltered with the only addition being a minimal amount of sulfite for stability. Andrew Scott, Jennifer Clark, Bridgette, and Barry are the proprietors. Grapes come from vineyards located in the Finger Lakes region of New York–about a hundred miles west of the winery. All wine is made from single vineyard lots and labeled as such except in cases where the vineyard name is proprietary. We work with the same growers each season, often taking fruit from the same rows year after year. Grapes are hand harvested directly into our picking boxes and driven to the barn in Acidalia where all processing, fermentation, elevage and bottling takes place.
