In 1984 Bob and Betty McKinney cleared the property that is now known as Elhanan Vineyard, planting some of the original Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris vines in the South Willamette Valley. Over the next ten years they planted a total of 20,000 vines on a 35-acre plot. The vineyard is rooted in Jory and Willakenzie soils, and sits on a southeast facing slope with a peak elevation of 700 feet. Since the spring of 2001, Scott Buente and his wife Kathy have been operating the French Ridge Vineyard on their property west of Killbuck. After over a decade of harvesting their grapes and selling them to various wine makers, Scott and Kathy are opening their estate and their products to the public for the first time in the form of the French Ridge Winery. It will be the first winery to be owned and operated inside Holmes County. When the couple first planted the vineyard, they began modestly with just two types of grapes. In the eleven years that have passed since, it has evolved into one of the largest vineyards in the tri-county area. French Ridge spans twenty three acres, ten thousand vines, and eleven different grape types. When asked what prompted them to get into the business, Kathy responds with a smile, “We blame it on my mother. She always told us ‘You have all this land, why don’t you do something with it?’ So we did!”

Our Diamond Mountain Cabernet is grown at 1800 feet in elevation on a rugged slope at the top of the Diamond Mountain. This location, combined with the loamy volcanic light colored soil create a unique, rich and bold wine. The aromatic profile consists of ripe blackberry, fresh boysenberry, nutmeg, allspice and dark roast coffee. The palate is rich and supple, consisting of flavors of mocha, vanilla, cedar spice, bramble berries, cigar box and toffee. The tannins are indicative of the mountain location, being broad and firm but already well integrated creating a lovely structure with a long, lingering finish.

The ambiance is amazing. We all got a tasting which included a great variety of white and red wines. We ended up sitting in the patio area, which overlooks the mountains and a sliver of the water. I would highly recommend coming here and getting away from the bustle of Seattle. All of the wines were exquisite and the service was fantastic.

There has been a long tradition of growing things on the Three Oak Winery property. Built on the site of a former nursery, our vineyard continues to work with nature and the land to produce the best wines possible. Beginning in 2011, Albert Lea natives Jay Enderson and Dan Sorensen envisioned a winery on the outskirts of Albert Lea, Minnesota. They came upon the nursery property and saw the potential for a vineyard. The first grapevines were planted in the summer of 2011, beginning with the varietals Frontenac Gris and Marquette. A former garage and storage area was converted into the production room, and the rest is history! A few years later, the West Vineyard was planted, and the tasting room was completed in spring of 2017.

David Huse started Five Star Cellars 2000 as a small winery dedicated to a family approach. Stone Pillar Vineyard & Winery, Johnson County’s original farm winery, is located 20 minutes southwest of Kansas City in Olathe, Kansas and is owned and operated by the Hoff Family who has farmed this land since before the Civil War. George and Brandi Hoff were inspired to begin a vineyard and winery of their own while on vacation in 2004. The luscious grain fields that surrounded the beautiful family owned vineyards and wineries that they saw while on a winery tour at Niagara on the Lake reminded them of the family farm in Kansas and the seed was planted. Once home, George convinced farm owners Tom Sr. and his wife Marcie that a winery would be a wonderful way to keep the small acreage farm productive as the city swallowed up nearby pastures and fields. The first vines were planted in 2007 and the winery opened for sales May 1, 2010. The family works closely with their own vines and their local growers to ensure a high quality hand-picked Kansas wine. The vineyard consists of fifty-six acres of grapes on approximately 180 acres of land, much of which is forested. The upper vineyard was homesteaded by the Wooldridge Family in the 1870s and the creek running through the property bears their name. The creek provides a wildlife corridor for the bears and other animals who have become part of the Wooldridge Creek lore. Black bears, the most voracious of the local wildlife, help manage crop levels, easily scaling or breaking their way through any vineyard fencing that might be in their way. The most effective deterrent so far has been to take the “offensive” and leave talk radio playing at a high volume in the vineyard through the night. Our vineyard manager and neighbour, Rich Lorelli, has been tending the vineyards since the early eighties. Under his care, we grow Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Malbec, Tempranillo, Zinfandel, Chardonnay, Viognier, Riesling and Gewurztraminer.

Darrell and Tina Simmermaker are owners of the winery. After reading an article on grape production in the Iowa State “Vision” Alumni magazine, Darrell began planting grapes in 2008 on his Mother’s farm with the help of his brother and both their families. Chateau Nonchalant was planted in 1999 by Weldon & Vicki Manning in one of the small valleys of the Umpqua. The south-facing hillside was planted with grafted rootstocks with four varietals, Pinot Noir, Tempranillo, Malvasia, and Syrah. The rootstocks were selected to match the microclimate and soil type that are present at the vineyard. The first production years was 2005 and an estate Pinot Noir was produced that reflects the vineyards capability. Production has been limited to preserve quality and typically less than 1.5 tons per acre. Our vineyard is on its 16th year and has produced rich complex wines. Our tasting room reflects old-world comfort and a warm friendly atmosphere.

Best Vineyards started as a crazy idea to grow some table grapes and make a few bucks off the farm Wilbert had purchased back in 2000. Rachel, Wilbert’s sister was a somewhat reluctant participant at the time. Berretta, Wilbert’s other sister, hopped on the crazy wagon a year or so later. A local farmer of corn, wheat, and soybeans used the land at the time and we thought that trying an alternative crop would be an interesting experiment. So began the search for the “perfect” crop to plant that didn’t take too much time to, too much experience, and gave a decent return on the investment and was fun to do.
