Forty-four years ago, Lupe Maldonado moved to California from Atacheo, a small farming community in Michoacan, Mexico. Lupe spent many years working in vineyards throughout Napa Valley. He settled down in the small town of St Helena. In 1971 Lupe was working for Sterling Vineyards when Peter Newton offered Lupe the opportunity to join him in the creation of a new winery in the Spring Mountain District of St. Helena. Lupe’s dedication and hard work were beginning to pay off; he was named vineyard manager for Newton Vineyard. With Newton, Lupe found a home where he proudly dedicated all his energy for over thirty years. In 1999 his son Hugo, stepped into the role of Vineyard manager when Lupe planned to retire . Lupe began devoting his three decades of viticulture wisdom to his own grapes. Black Dirt Distilling, LLC was formed in March, 2012. In order to meet the demand of the newly crafted and already renowned Black Dirt Bourbon and Black Dirt Apple Jack, born at the Warwick Valley Winery and Distillery, the construction of a 4,000 square foot distillery along with a 60 foot distillation column was completed in Pine Island, NY in 2013. Today, the facility produces upwards of 60 barrels of whiskey or apple jack every week. The Black Dirt Distillery expands upon the years of experience in both distillation and marketing that co-founders and managing partners Jason Grizzanti and Jeremy Kidde have accumulated. The wines produced by the Rued family begin with boots; boots on the ground in vineyards that are tended directly by the family. Patriarch Richard and son Tom together look after and farm their Home Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley as well as leased vineyards in the Russian River Valley and Alexander Valley.The Rued family farms far more acres of grapes than they use in their small production of wines. The large selection of grapes at their disposal allow them to evaluate each vineyard block by block to determine which grapes are best suited to the style of wines they want to produce for their own label. We began as a family farm almost 100 years ago, producing apples and pears. In 2004 the orchard’s age required replacing the trees or trying something new. We grew hay for several years to add nitrogen back to the soil, as the dream of owning a vineyard and winery began to take shape. Nothing worthwhile is easy, and we had plenty of challenges along the way. We planted our first block of Pinot Noir in 2012. Broken Boulder Vineyard gets its name from the enormous basalt boulders that graced our fields, courtesy of Mt. Hood thousands of years ago. These huge rocks hid just under the surface to make straight lines for trellis and irrigation systems impossible. We weren’t about to give up, so we hired an excavator to pull them from the soil. Piles of these boulders are at the end of every vineyard block; we say you may “adopt a rock” if you bring a crane and a flatbed truck. We’re often asked about our winery name’s origin. Obviously, the “Stone” in Stave & Stone comes from the vineyard boulders. “Stave” is more complicated; the first thing to know is that our family name, Fletcher, means arrow maker. […]

In 2008 Marvin Dunson began to think about using the family farm to produce wines. The family farm, at the base of beautiful Currahee Mountain, had once been an apple orchard owned by Marvin’s parents. By 2009 planting had begun that would ultimately lead to award winning wines. Marvin’s daughter, Ashley, was very instrumental in getting it all started. The first wine that Marvin produced was Sweet Cheryl, a sweet red muscadine wine, in memory of his wife who died of cancer before ever seeing the vineyards and winery. The next three to be produced were also muscadine wines—3 Mile White, Golden Harvest, and Currahee Rose.

Initially, the fruit grown at Kamen Estate was sold to premium Sonoma wineries. In 1996, a devastating fire tore through the property destroying half of the vines along with Robert’s home. Where others would see this as a tremendous setback, Robert’s credo, “Everything happens for a reason”, held sway. The fire forced him to focus not on what had been lost, but on what could be gained. Out of the experience he decided to stop selling grapes and began to make his own wines. Major replanting began as soon as the ground cooled. Cutting edge viticultural techniques were employed, new selections of Cabernet clones were chosen and different rootstocks were used. The first release of Kamen Estate Cabernet Sauvignon was in 1999.

In 1992, we harvested our first two tons of Pinot Noir from four rows atop a knoll in the southwest corner of Carneros. Producing but five barrels, this marked the beginning of Ancien Wines. When husband and wife team Sandy Garber and Ralph Meyer settled in Southern California’s Topanga Canyon, their sights were not set on the vineyard way of life. As they looked around the rolling hills of their quiet surroundings, better known as a Hollywood hideaway than an agricultural hotbed, they began to see their home as Los Angeles County’s answer to the Southern Rhône Valley. So began the planting, first 90 vines on their canyon property and then expanding into a grower’s co-op with friends and neighbors. Bagley’s Poplar Ridge Vineyards was born after our late owner Dave Bagley decided to stop making wine for others and start his own business. Progeny’s Special Selection Reserve (S.S.R.) consists of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. We aged our eighth vintage 20 months in French oak barrels, followed by 12 months in our 25 hectoliter Oval Oak Tank. The S.S.R finishes with 36 months of bottle aging before release. This wine captures the prime essence of the Mt. Veeder appellation by demonstrating its power and long aging capability. De Tierra Vineyards began in 1998 as an organic grape-growing operation in the Salinas Valley by Tom Russell, an agriculture professional from Phoenix, Arizona. Russell had transitioned the majority of his conventional row crop vegetable operation to organic in the early 1990’s, and had great success in the California market. Russell was passionate about wine and farming, and wanted to explore the benefits of organic farming with wine grapes. Russell teamed up with friend and winemaker of Vignalta Italy, Lucio Gomiero, and planned to develop an organic vineyard in the Corral de Tierra Valley. The motivation for creating Cosmos Cellars came from necessity, as do most new concepts. In 1997, most Napa Valley vintners were faced with the same challenge: a HUGE tannic cabernet. Piedra Creek Winery was conceived atop a small knoll in the heart of the MacGregor Vineyard overlooking the beautiful Edna Valley of San Luis Obispo, California. Jamesport Vineyards is a father-son collaboration that began in 1986 making it one of the North Fork’s oldest vineyards. Since Ron Goerler Sr. acquired the 165-year-old barn that houses the winery and tasting room a lot has changed, both aesthetically and agriculturally. The tasting room has increased to accommodate an ever growing number of visitors. The great lawn out back provides the perfect setting for the Jamesport weekends where people gather to enjoy good wine, live music and light fare. In the vineyard, Ron Jr. continues to update their plantings ensuring they produce the highest quality of fruit available in the region today.
