In 1883, John Crellin planted vineyards into a red clay knoll and named it Ruby Hill after the rich red soils found throughout the property. Construction of Crelin’s Winery Building was completed in 1887, with a capacity to produce 125,000 gallons of wine. By 1889, Ruby Hill Winery was one of the largest and most revered producers of wine in the Livermore Valley. For the first five years, George and Marianne and their three children, Gordon, Laura, and Jean worked the farm. After work, after school, and weekends, their days were filled with farming – all done by hand. The first expansion of the groves took place with the planting of 700 trees. This was done with the help of the local high school baseball team. Gordon was on the team and they were always looking for a fundraiser. Each subsequent expansion brought its own set of challenges. Being the only grove in New Mexico, there was no support industry in place for harvesting or processing. Necessity truly being the mother of invention, the Schweers had to develop their own processing operation, or truck the nuts out of state for processing. Fabricating equipment, buying used equipment, and trucking the nuts for salting and roasting, were all ongoing projects in the early years.

CurlingVine owners Thomas and Andrea Held have a long history in the wine industry. Thomas actually grew up in a winery. In the 1960s, his parents, Jim and Betty Held, opened Stone Hill Winery in Hermann, bringing the long-dormant Missouri wine industry back to life. His first job at the winery, at age two, was slipping seals on bottles after they had been corked. Thomas attended the University of Arkansas and Fresno State in California, where he earned a degree in food science with a minor in enology and viticulture. When the Held family opened a Branson location, 23-year-old Thomas was chosen to oversee the operation. The Branson winery grew to be a huge success, helped along, says Thomas, by the School of Hard Knocks, the wisdom of his parents, and the support of the Branson business community.

As a youth, Ronei spent summers in Casalvieri, a town in the Italian province of Frosinone, where his grandfather taught him the art of making wine. Back in Michigan as an adult, he continued the tradition by making wine in his garage. His first batch left room for improvement. “We would get together with our neighbors and spend a weekend crushing grapes. I remember that my mother was at our house during our first attempt at the winemaking process. She just shook her head and in broken English, said “Da Vino…no comma good!’ Mama was right.”

Cedar Creek Winery is a family-run winery crafting an array of award-winning wines, we are located in the historic Cedar Creek Settlement situated in downtown Cedarburg, Wisconsin. Our winery offers a unique experience with tastings and tours daily. Our location, both the town and building, has a rich history. Constructed in 1864, the Cedar Creek Settlement was originally a working woolen mill until 1969 when it went out of business due to the introduction of synthetic fabrics. The building sat empty until a local home winemaker, Jim Pape, purchased the building in 1972. Jim and his wife Sandy converted the building into what became known as the Newberry and later the Stone Mill Winery. In the ‘70s, the winery was famous for its cherry wines and the unique clay bottles in which they were bottled. Traditional, extremely large casks were used for about ten years, and then replaced with stainless steel tanks and smaller barrels.

Doc Elliott (the “E” in B&E) started a racing horse operation of running quarter horses in 1952 and throughout the years produced several world champions. Winter’s Hill is an Estate winery located in the Dundee Hills of Oregon. The Gladhart family owns and operates Winter’s Hill, from managing the vineyard and the rest of our farm to making our wines, to greeting you in the tasting room when you come to visit. Thirty-five acres of vineyards are nestled into a 150-acre farm including fir and oak forests. Farming this land is a privilege, and we have followed sustainable farming practices since Peter and Emily Gladhart planted our first vines in 1990. We are certified by LIVE and SalmonSafe in recognition of our efforts. The first wines bearing our name were 298 cases of 1998 Pinot Noir. Our production has grown slowly and steadily as wine lovers in the Northwest and around the country have discovered our Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and dessert wines such as our Hans & Lena Pinot Gris. In 2004 Delphine and Russell joined the family partnership, with Delphine taking on the duties of Winemaker.

Chad and Crista Guebert purchased Golden Road Vineyards in 2017 and moved from Alexandria, VA to State Road, NC where they took over vineyard management starting in 2018. The couple met in the Washington DC area where they worked as consultants for the DoD and VA healthcare system modernization. They continue working in these roles along with operating the vineyard and preparing to open the tasting room. Their goal was to eventually grow the business from a vineyard that sold grapes to local wineries to include a tasting room that would feature wines made from grapes grown on the estate. We focus primarily on newer cold hardy varieties such as Marquette and Frontenac Gris and this spring we planted a new cold hardy red grape named Petite Pearl. We also grow Vignole and Traminette. Traminette has been designated as Indiana’s signature grape and is a hybrid grape that produces a wonderful white wine with pronounced aromas similar to one of it’s parents, Gewurztraminer. We also purchase grapes and juice of varieties that are not feasible to grow in our locale such as Riesling, Cabernet Franc, Merlot etc. We also produce several fruit wines including our signature Apple wine which has cherry juice added to it to give it an extra measure of complexity and flavor.

Organic wineries are rare in the United States, and even more rare in Arkansas. John Trickett of Circle T Winery & Vineyards is working to become the first in the state. Trickett said he chose to go all organic because of a feeling that the land had been good to his family and he wanted “to return the favor.” The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s official National Organic Program stamp of “organic” on his Logan County vineyard came in January 2013. His first vines came from Novavine in Napa, Calif., and planted on 1 acre during the great Easter weekend freeze of 2007. He planted 2.5 more acres in 2012, having started soil work in 2010. “I tell people that I could write all the years I’ve been alive on little slips of paper, put them in a hat, draw one at random and not come up with a worse year to plant grapes than 2012” during a drought, Trickett said. “If I hadn’t had drip irrigation, I would have lost them all (2,000 plants — 1,600 Syrah and 400 Viognier). We still had losses obviously, but most survived.”

Creating red-wine from grapes grown on small acreages in both Napa Valley and Knights Valley is the passion of Beth and Jim Summers. Jim Summers originally purchased a 28-acre vineyard in Knights Valley in 1987. Knights Valley is located northwest of Calistoga, between Mount St. Helena and the Alexander Valley. At that time it was primarily Merlot grapes planted on the property 30 years ago by Dan Duckhorn, with some Muscat Canelli. The first production of Summers Ranch Reserve Merlot was the 1992 vintage. We currently produce 900 cases. We also make Petite Sirah from the Knights Valley estate. As Knights Valley is one of Sonoma’s warmest appellations; its volcanic soils and close proximity to the Napa Valley, have led to increased interest in Bordeaux varietals from the appellation in recent years.

When the famous actor, Raymond Burr, first took an interest in permaculture, and purchased the land near Healdsburg, California, he didn’t then know how fruitfully the future would unfold. Burr is best remembered for his long-standing TV series “Perry Mason” and later “Ironside,” and since the planting of the vineyard, it has flourished producing grapes which were eventually turned into award-winning wines. A local farmer of corn, wheat, and soybeans used the land at the time and we thought that trying an alternative crop would be an interesting experiment.
