Amalie Robert Estate was founded at the turn of the century by Dena Drews and Ernie Pink. Dena and Ernie left the corporate world behind and began a journey to pursue a vision. What we found was a beautiful Willamette Valley cherry orchard, and the opportunity to take a hand in our own destiny. Ernie was pretty sure he saw his vineyard beneath that old orchard and struck a deal to find out. The cherries were harvested in the summer of 1999 and the transformation to vineyard began in earnest. As a young man, growing up on the family ranch on Jalama Road didn’t hold much future for Lompoc native, Mark Cargasacchi. With cattle and bean prices stagnant, Mark decided the only way to make a living was to leave. After successfully pursuing a career in environmental chemistry in Texas and San Francisco, word was getting out about the amazing wine being produced by Richard Sanford in the area now known as the Sta. Rita Hills. This piqued Mark’s interest and he returned home to help plant the first of the family vineyards back in 1999.

Tapteil Vineyard was first planted in the spring of 1985 and now totals 25 acres of three varieties–Cabernet Sauvignon (15.5 acres), Cabernet Franc (2.0 acres) and Merlot (7.5 acres). The vineyard lies between 740 and 880 feet in elevation on predominately silt loam soil. Site selection had a basic focal point – find the best site at which to grow Cabernet Sauvignon. This site, together with careful vineyard management, provides wine grapes of exceptional quality and shows why Red Mountain has continued to be the source for high quality wines. The name “Tapteil” comes from the Sahaptian (the language of the Yakama Indians) term for “narrow” and refers to the narrow portion of the Yakima River as it flows south and east of Yakima. The term Tapteilmin or “narrow river people” was used to identify those living along this portion of the Yakima River.

Ritchie Creek Vineyard is located at the top of Spring Mountain in the Napa Valley appellation’s premium Cabernet Sauvignon growing district. We produce just 800 cases of handcrafted estate wines from our small mountain vineyard which was planted in 1967. At 2000 feet above sea level, our vineyard’s thin rocky soil and cool northern exposure bear low yields of two to three tons of fruit per acre as compared to vineyards in the Napa Valley floor which produce four to six tons per acre. Our low yielding vines produce deeply concentrated wines with intense varietal character which have proven their great aging potential.

The South Slope begins at the highest elevation and the furthest South of all of our Vineyards blocks. It slopes from South to North about 45 feet and it’s soils are predominantly sandy loam. The berry size is medium with a high berry count giving cluster weight that has yields approaching 2 1/4 tons/acre (our highest yields). It is 100% French clone 777, and tends to show it’s earthy side far more then our other clones. Although this wine definitely has a French origin, each year it becomes more and more new world.

Winegrower/poet/surfer Bill Hawley began to pioneer Random Ridge in 1980. At the end of a remote fire road at 2200 feet on California’s stunning Mount Veeder, he built a house for his young family with recycled lumber. The next year he cleared and planted a 10-acre vineyard right on the Napa-Sonoma County ridgeline. Today from the home and vineyard the views of Mount Tamalpais and the San Francisco Bay still dazzle the southern horizon and the sun sets over Sonoma Mountain. The vineyard’s intense fruit now yields a limited production of exceptional wines that are spicy, extracted, and rich: “wines with alti-dude.”

This idyllic setting captivated John Zahoudanis when searching for vineyard property in 2005. He had grown up on a farm near Mount Olympus in Greece, where his family cultivated olives, citrus, and a small plot of grapes used to make wine for themselves. John and wife Sandra purchased the estate and named it after their daughter Demetria, and the Greek goddess of harvest Demeter. Today Demetria is still very much a family operation. John and Sandra’s son, Alexis, has lived and worked on the estate full-time since 2009. He works closely with winemaker Harry Waye, who also oversees the vineyard – one of the first in Santa Barbara County to be farmed biodynamically – with forty-six acres planted to Rhone varietals, five white and five red. Demetria also makes Burgundy-style wines, sourcing organic Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, and Pinot Gris grapes from trusted vineyards in cooler California appellations.

Ernst wanted to experience a Northern Hemisphere harvest and took a job in the Sierra Foothills of California where he spent two years working in this warmer climate—learning a lot about managing higher pH wines and riper flavors. Hid-In-Pines Vineyard is a very small vineyard nestled in among a Pine Forest in the Champlain Valley of New York. When you stop here you will get to see the vineyard and winery all in one basic location, although we are beginning to add new plantings at remote sites. Richard Lamoy is the sole proprietor of the operation and currently wears many hats – that of the vineyard manager, wine maker, chemist, salesman and accountant. The Vineyard is currently three acres of mostly very cold hardy wine grapes. There are some semi-cold hardy wine and table grapes also grown. Capra Collina in English translates to “Nanny Goat Hill”, an area of Jessup heavily populated by Italian immigrants in the early half of the Twentieth Century. The settlers kept free-range goats for their milk and cheese, both ricotta and mozzarella. The goats were housed in a communal barn which later became the site of a public school. Unfortunately, the goats were imprinted to return to the site in inclement weather or at first sign of trouble. The school and surrouning neighborhood eventually was referred to as “Nanny Goat Hill”. We use the name to honor those early Italian setters and to recall their contributions to the American experience.

At Ott & Hunter Wines, we partner with several of Washington’s greatest vineyards to create a small quantity of exceptional blends and single varietal wines. We use traditional French and artisan techniques: cold soaks, co-fermentation at crush, hand punch downs, stem inclusion, sur lie aging & battonage, minimal filtration or fining, and a mixture of neutral and once-used French oak barriques and puncheons. We handle our wines very lightly during barrel aging, racking only after primary fermentation, occasionally after one year, and again prior to bottling. We favor low oxygen exposure and minimal sulfite additions during to help preserve the wines’ structure and ability to age. Our Swedish Arts and Crafts inspired winery is designed to optimize its solar exposure with an insulated, passive-solar heated fermentation room. And our cellar employs super-insulation and earth cooling to minimize its energy use. Along similar lines, we are using lighter weight glass for many of our releases, saving resources and energy.

Eberle wines have showcased the history and diverse flavors of the Paso Robles Appellation since 1979. Gary Eberle grew up in a small town in Pennsylvania and went to Penn State on a football scholarship. After graduating with a Bachelor’s of Science in biology, he attended Louisiana State University (LSU) where he continued his graduate work studying cellular genetics. While attending LSU, Gary developed an appreciation for wine and changed his academic path to become a winemaker. Gary launched his career as a winemaker and as the “Pioneer” of Paso Robles Wine Region by helping to establish his family’s Estrella River Winery & Vineyards. In the late 70’s, he decided to pursue his own project and acquired nearly 64 acres just down the road from Estrella River Winery. Shortly thereafter, Gary released his first Eberle wine, the 1979 Cabernet Sauvignon debuting the iconic boar logo, depicting the German origin of the name Eberle, meaning “small boar.”

The idea at Sutton Cellars has always been to allow the most character in what we make with the least amount of additions, processing, or manipulation. In the current zeitgeist of “natural” wines this may sound like a well worn trope. The last time we filtered a wine was in the late 90s, the last purchased yeast used was for a stuck ferment in 2004. Organic, dry farmed fruit is used, always hand harvested and sorted, and fermentations usually last three weeks or more. In the last decade the use of new oak has diminished to zero. We bottle unfined and unfiltered and the bottles are gravity filled and hand corked or capped. Very little, if any, sulfur is added. From aperitif, to cider, to dry and dessert wines there is a consistency that shows these practices. Please come visit our winery in San Francisco and taste for yourself.

Our 22-acre vineyard is located in the northern part of the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. This region has the oldest marine soils in the Willamette Valley, protected from the elements by the mountains of the Coast Range. These unique circumstances of geology and climate result in wines with a flavor profile unlike anywhere else in the world. We started planting our vineyard in 1984; our average vine age is 27 years. The sedimentary rock-based Peavine and Willakenzie soil deposits over ancient sea beds offer excellent drainage for the mature root systems. We have Vertical Shoot Position (VSP) trellising throughout and employ sustainable and dry farming practices. Plantings include: 7 acres of Pinot Noir, 3 acres of Dijon Chardonnay, 4 acres of Müller-Thurgau, 3 acres of Pinot Gris, 1 acre of Carmine, and ½ acre each Pinot Meunier and Grüner Veltliner. Made from our estate vineyard and aged in French oak for 16 months. Our Syrah shares many of the same characteristics as the Syrah wines from the Rhone region of France. Our Syrah is much leaner than most American Syrah’s. It has notes of dried cherries and olallieberry pie. Silkwood Wines began life in 1979 with a Chardonnay produced at Spring Mountain Winery in St. Helena. This Chardonnay won great reviews and was served frequently in the Reagan White House. President Reagan, Ed Meiss, Michael Dever and George Bush also served it and transported it aboard Air Force One to French, Canadian, and Mexico Summits. My grandfather produced Alicante Bouschet until phyloxera wiped out the vines. He planted rice, which controlled the pest and made eight barrels a year from a few vines of AB and Muscat. My family continues to produce rice in Northern California.

John & Jody Wrigley met in 2005 while John was looking for property to start his winemaking dream. The land that would become J Wrigley Vineyard was purchased in 2006. In 2007, in the midst of preparation and planting, John proposed to Jody at the corner of what would become the first block of Pinot Noir, now named the Proposal Block. Riesling and Pinot Gris were also added that first year. As the story goes, Jody replied with an enthusiastic yes, but she had a caveat: she loves Chardonnay and the vineyard lacked Chardonnay grapes! Never one to back down from a challenge, John started planning for a Chardonnay block, which would eventually be dubbed the Acceptance Block. By the time it was planted in 2011, not only were John and Jody married, but the family had grown to include their two children, Jordan and Hayes. Sustainable viticulture is followed and there is great care for the environment. Pest management is followed with the support of the Napa Valley Agriculture Commission. The European Grape Vine Moth has been controlled through “sexual confusion”. This technique consists in placing strips emanating insect sex attractant pheromones in the vineyard. These pheromones mask the female insect’s own attractant so that the sexes fail to get together. Owl and bird nest boxes are also placed throughout the vineyard to help in natural pest control. The Grasso estate vineyard utilizes a GDC quadrilateral trellis system with the row direction planted north/south to take advantage of east/west sun. The vines are planted on 1103P, clone 7 on the slopes and 5C, clone 7 in the flat areas. Canopy management is constantly worked throughout the growing season. Harvest generally occurs in early to mid October. During harvest the grape clusters are picked by hand and carried to 4 x 4 bins for transport to the winery. Total yield in the vineyard is limited to 2-3 tons per acre to ensure a superior Cabernet Sauvignon.

The wines produced by the Rued family begin with boots; boots on the ground in vineyards that are tended directly by the family. Patriarch Richard and son Tom together look after and farm their Home Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley as well as leased vineyards in the Russian River Valley and Alexander Valley.The Rued family farms far more acres of grapes than they use in their small production of wines. The large selection of grapes at their disposal allow them to evaluate each vineyard block by block to determine which grapes are best suited to the style of wines they want to produce for their own label. Chip began Burnet Ridge Winery, named after the street where he grew up in Northern Kentucky, to make quality wine for himself and his friends and family. This small Old-World style of winery was never intended to be a commercial operation but one of personal enjoyment. Working as safety engineer for the state of Kentucky during the day and researching and experimenting with wine at night, Chip perfected his wines. Chip would often show up at local wine tastings with his hand-crafted artisan wines and share them with local wine advocates. Kerry is the winemaker for Côte Bonneville. She began making wine in middle and high school in a series of science projects. After earning her engineering degree from Northwestern University in Chicago, she worked in Torino, Italy in Fiat’s management development program. Kerry received her master’s degree in Viticulture and Enology from UC Davis, and then assumed the winemaker title in August 2009. Kerry gained experience in Napa, California, Argentina, and Australia. There’s no other place like this — the Washington DC Area’s Only “Urban Winery” where we explore winemaking together and wine appreciation. Our Teaching & Tasting Bar overlooks the entire wine production area — you can sample great wines while you watch every step in the winemaking process. And for those ready to learn even more, our Vintner program provides the opportunity for individuals and small groups to work side-by-side with us as they craft their own wine. It’s “your” wine with the best Virginia, California or Washington State fruit; your design, your label and, of course your story and passion. Vint Hill Craft Winery is located in the historic barns at Vint Hill Farm Station, in the building where in 1944 our military intercepted the German encryption codes that started the end of World War II. We also feature a very consumer friendly wine club that allows you to select quantity, frequency and price range of the wines we select to ship to you. Since our inventory is constantly changing, our club members never receive the same wine twice (unless so requested).
